1836Best.-Nr. 9235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages. Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. William M'Neir unknown

1856Original publishers boards, 12mo, 132 pages. Singerman 1440. DE RENNE II, p.579. Milberg nr. 58. Uncommon work by this Jewish author who would go on to become a Confederate Officer during the Civil War. Levy (1827 - 1888) . Was also editor in chief of the Savannah Daily Advertiser, and in April 1868 Levy criticized in print the political views of a certain Dr. James Waring. Waring, apparently thin-skinned, demanded a duel. Levy obliged, but luckily friends were able to defuse the situation (Encyclopedia of Southern Jewish Communities, 2013) . Logan was a popular actress of the mid-19th Century, daughter to Cornelius Logan, a comic actor & playwriter who served as her manager until his death in 1853. While Logan was born in Philadelphia, she made her name in the antebellum South, with many lucrative engagements in cities such as Savannah, where she, no doubt, inspired Mr. Levy to write this work in her honor. Very Good Condition. (amr-45-23B) xx

1852Best.-Nr. 194391852. Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia for 1852 documents slave-state governance in antebellum Virginia providing evidence of the legal system through which racial control fiscal administration corporate authorization and transportation development operated before the Civil War. The statute titled "An Act to suppress Gambling by Negroes and white persons together" identifies interracial association as a matter of state regulation showing how Virginia law extended racial discipline beyond labor and movement into informal social contact. The volume supports research into African American legal history slavery-era governance Southern economic development and the relationship between racial restriction and state-directed modernization. Richmond: William F. Ritchie Public Printer 1852. First edition. 8vo. Half legal calf over marbled boards with spine label; 3 4-403 pages including index. The volume compiles the year's legislative acts including statutes on taxation fiscal policy corporate charters navigation companies steamship enterprises transportation infrastructure and social regulation. The gambling statute involving Black and white participants provides especially direct evidence of racial boundary-making in everyday law while the numerous provisions for navigation steamship and internal improvement companies demonstrate the process by which Virginia promoted commercial expansion and regional economic integration through legislative authorization. Crack at front board gutter with board still holding; moderate wear to leather and marbled boards; interior generally clean with expected toning. Overall very good. A substantial antebellum Virginia legal volume linking the mechanics of state government to the racial and economic priorities of a slaveholding society. unknown books
