1966Best.-Nr. 43505Buenos Aires: La Congregación 1966. First edition. Original paper wrappers 4to 95 25 unnumbered pages including illustrations 26 cm. In Spanish. Title translates to "The Congregation: House Organ of the Israelite Congregation of the Argentine Republic." One issue of the publication circulated by the largest and oldest Jewish community in Argentina based out of the Congregacion Israelita de la Republica Argentina in Buenos Aires. Inscribed on cover by contributor Bernardo Gravier "In 1862 the Israelite Congregation of Buenos Aires later renamed with the current denomination: 'of the Argentine Republic' the first institution of the Jewish community in Argentina was created. For years the Jewish community residing in Buenos Aires met in a private house to celebrate their religious traditions until in 1871 the Government of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento authorized for the first time the practice of the Jewish Rabinate in the country and Rabbi Henry Joseph was the first spiritual authority. From 1879 he devoted himself to charity as well as to the registration of births marriages and deaths of the community. This same year he began raising funds for the acquisition of a plot in order to establish a cemetery that would allow Jews to be buried according to their ritual. In 1891 the first Jewish school and the Latin Israelite Congregation of Buenos Aires which brought together Moroccan Jews were also founded. In 1889 with the contribution of Baron Hirsch the congregation bought a plot of land in Buenos Aires on Libertad Street in order to build a synagogue. On September 27 1897 they placed in front of where the so-called Miró Palace present-day Plaza Lavalle was located the foundation stone of what would be the first synagogue in the city a ceremony attended by the Municipal Mayor Francisco Alcobendas. Due to the remarkable growth of the Jewish community the building built there was completely modified in 1932 acquiring its current features." Wikipedia SUBJECTS: Judaism -- Periodicals. 1805Best.-Nr. 114941805. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. 12mo. 19 1 blank pp. First edition. As issued stitched in plain wrapper; a few leaves unopened. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the bottom inner margin of the front wrapper and to the deckled edges; light soiling but largely a remarkably copy; contents clean. An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men were the foundations on which American independence was established . Principles and not men have been the objects of contest ever since between the several parties which have arisen under our government; but we are now brought to a point when it is to be determined by the public suffrage whether men setting at defiance the wishes of the people and the principles of representative government shall govern Pennsylvania" p. 3. It is perhaps comforting to realize that some things never change including campaign rhetoric. This is an unusual copy as the title should ready: ". . . Notice at Lancaster on April 3d 1805"; but the "3d" is not printed. This appears to be an unrecorded variant. Perhaps the type fell out or was battered whatever the case it differs from the others in the impression. A cursory comparison suggests this is the only difference. 1942Best.-Nr. 053306Ankara: TBMM Hususi" Letterhead Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara 1942. Soft cover. Very Good. Original manuscript autograph letter signed ALS by Ali Çetinkaya sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil who was the father of Fahire Battalgil Battalgazi who was the first Turkish zoologist. For Battalgil's brother's death Çetinkaya is conveying his condolences. The letter was written and signed by Ali Çetinkaya but he added his wife and daughter. Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara. Ali Çetinkaya also known as "Kel" Ali Bey was an Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey including a period in 1939-40 as his country's first Minister of Transport. He was born in Kara Hisâr-i Sâhib present-day Afyonkarahisar in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet as the son of Ahmed Efendi. He studied in the Bursa Military High School Bursa Askerî Idadisi . After graduating from military high school he entered the Ottoman Military Academy Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Sâhâne In 1898 he graduated the academy and joined the Ottoman military as a Second Lieutenant Mülâzim-i Sani . During World War I he served for the army in the Caucasus and Galicia fronts. When the Greek forces were landing at Smyrna on May 15 1919 he was a lieutenant colonel and the commander of 172nd Infantry Regiment stationed in the Aegean coastal town of Ayvalik. His regiment was under the command of the 56th Division of Hürrem Bey. Ali played a key role in the first stage of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 starting with the opening battle. He was briefly able to hold back the advance into the city of Greek occupation forces. His action is considered to mark the first shots fired by regular forces in the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish War although there were earlier confrontations in which irregular militias participated including the battle involving Hasan Tahsin in Izmir as well as actions in Urla and Ödemis. The hill in Ayvalik from where the first shots were fired is now called Ilk Kursun Tepesi First Bullet Hill. Today there is a military rehabilitation center on that hill. After the war Ali Çetinkaya was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for eight successive terms and served until 1942 holding ministerial posts in six different governments including with the formation of a Ministry of Transport becoming Turkey's first Minister of Transport. Ali Çetinkaya is considered a hero in Turkey. Cunda Island of Ayvalik was renamed Alibey Adasi Ali Bey Island after him although the old name remains in common use. TBMM Hususi" Letterhead, Dated 11. Meclis-i Mebûsân Birinci devre 1325-1326 içtimai. 326 senesi muâzene-i umûmîsi hakkinda . kaleme alinan esbâb-i mûcibe mazbata-yi umûmîsi. Meclis-i Mebûsân The Chamber of Deputies of the Ottoman Empire was the lower house of the General Assembly the Ottoman Parliament. Unlike to the upper house the Senate the members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected by the general Ottoman populace although suffrage was limited to males of a certain financial standing among other restrictions that varied over the Chamber's lifetime. The Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire began shortly after Abdul Hamid II was forced to restore the constitutional monarchy after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. The period established many political groups and parties. Ahmet Riza became the first President of the Chamber in 1908. An amendment in 1909 to the original 1876 constitution resulted in the Chamber gaining more true political power at the expense of the non-democratically elected Senate and the Sultan. A series of elections during this period resulted in the gradual ascendance of the Committee of Union and Progress's CUP domination in politics. The second largest party Liberal Unionist Party LU Turkish: Hürriyet ve Itilâf was in fact a coalition of parties led by Prince Sabahaddin. This is a rare protocol register book of Meclis-i Mebûsân.
