rif. elala6217Toronto: M.Reynolds Printer to the Hon. the House of Assembly 1835. First Edition of this famous report an eloquent and forceful indictment of the Family Compact Government largely written by Scottish-Canadian journalist and politician William Lyon Mackenzie who chaired the committee. The grievances of the Reformers are listed in detail: concern regarding the excessive power of the executive branch in Upper Canada and the campaigning of government officials for Tory politicians during elections criticism of companies like the Welland Canal Company that mismanaged funds given to them by the government and the salaries of officials who received patronage appointments. Demands are made for an elective legislative council and responsible government. A landmark document in the political history of Upper Canada. Mackenzie represented York County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and was elected the first mayor of Toronto in 1834. He led the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and after its defeat he unsuccessfully rallied American support for an invasion of Upper Canada as part of the Patriot War against British imperialism. Interestingly this is a signed presentation copy given the year of publication by lawyer politician and later judge Archibald McLean who was a rising member of the Family Compact. As a colonel of the militia during the 1837 rebellion he was involved in routing the rebels in Toronto commanding the left flank of the loyalist forces under Colonel James Fitzgibbon in the attack on Montgomery’s Tavern. rif. 19180Standing Council of the Baronetage London. 1909 or 1910. Henry Good & Son London E.C. 9pp 4to. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper; with central horizontal fold. A main topic of the meeting was as Sir Lambton Loraine explained the assertion by the Duke of Norfolk of his 'right to a jurisdiction over the Baronetage in every way' and his belief that he has 'a right to keep our record at his own house in St. James's Square whereas we have not yet got the King's answer to the Home Secretary's Committee's proposal that a person appointed by the Home Office should be the future Registrar of the Roll of the Baronetage'. Another matter discussed was 'whether the title "Baronet" should be on one's card'. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington 11th Baronet who has written at top-right of the title-page: 'Read 15 June 1910'. Scarce: no other copy found either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 1765rif. AQ21341A Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Guilleaume Desprez 1765. 92pp. Uncut stitched as issued. Edges a trifle dusty else clean and crisp. A printing of extracts from the minutes of the Assembly of the French clergy in 1765 a meeting most notable for reiterating the episcopacy's defence of it's exemption from taxation; a statement that from a Jansenist perspective amounted to a revocation of the Declaration of 1682 which had codified the principles of Gallicanism. The tensions bolstered by this corruption of Gallicanist fundamentals together with increased opposition to monarchical absolutism would pave the road to the Revolution - an ultimately the nationalisation of all ecclesiastical property. . 8vo. 1836rif. 9235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages. Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. 1867rif. BK0152Barbados: Office of "The Official Gazette" No. 14 Broad Street 1867. 30 pp. with unnumbered index 42 pp. Half leather over cloth boards. Ink ownership inscription "W. Brandford Griffith / 1869" on a preliminary blank. Scattered foxing and light toning. A locally printed manual for the Barbados House of Assembly with the ownership inscription of William Brandford Griffith then both a member of the Assembly and the island's auditor-general. Griffith served in the Assembly from 1861 to 1874 and was appointed auditor-general in 1863; he subsequently held several other colonial offices before becoming governor of the Gold Coast in 1885. The rules numbered through 271 and accompanied by an extensive alphabetical index set out the conduct of the Assembly's public business. The index includes procedures for issuing election writs and returning the names of elected members to the governor and council together with the course to be followed when writs had not been executed. Although published well after emancipation these rules governed an Assembly whose electorate remained restricted by property qualifications. Free men of color had gained voting rights subject to those qualifications in 1831 and Samuel Jackman Prescod entered the Assembly in 1843. Planters and merchants nevertheless continued to dominate both the Assembly and the Legislative Council during the period in which Griffith served. OCLC records the 1867 edition OCLC 823344433 but we have been unable to identify a current institutional holding. . Office of "The Official Gazette," No. 14, Broad Street unknown
