An "anthropological and folkloric study of the belief in fairies and supernatural beings among the Celtic peoples primarily in Ireland Scotland Wales and Brittany. Drawing from fieldwork and interviews Evans-Wentz compiled first-hand accounts of fairy sightings and experiences blending them with spiritual and psychological interpretations. The book received praise for its meticulous ethnographic detail but also criticism for its speculative and mystic overtones. Its impact lies in how it preserved fading oral traditions and inspired future folklorists and scholars of Celtic studies." / Celtes Folklore Celts Celts Folklore Folklore Occult Fe Fey Supernatural Magic. Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz 1878 1965 was an American anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism and in transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the Western world best known for publishing an early English translation of 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead' in 1927. After studying at Stanford University he migrated to Jesus College Oxford where he studied Celtic mythology and folklore. He performed ethnographic fieldwork collecting fairy folklore in Wales Scotland Ireland Cornwall Brittany and the Isle of Man. In 1911 he published his degree thesis as this book 'The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries'. It was his first published book. A very scarce copy of this important Celtic history of fairies and "the Old Religion". Folklorists say fairies are fragments of ancient religious beliefs; occultists call them nature spirits; the peasant tradition says they are fallen angels who were not good enough to be saved or bad enough to be lost. Dr. Evans-Wentz presents a body of tradition and testimony about an elusive order of life that survives in the natural setting of wild and lonely places. He was not satisfied with merely formal study but collected first-hand reports of fairies in Wales Ireland Scotland and Brittany and faced up to the key questions avoided by other folklorists. This is one of the most in-depth and scholarly attempts to explain the phenomena of the Celtic belief in fairies; it includes an extensive survey of the literature from many different perspectives including folk-lore history anthropology and psychology. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; xxxvi 524 pages . 1927réf. 191086London: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1927. Presented to an outstanding early 20th-century Tibetologist First edition presentation copy inscribed by the editor on the front free endpaper "To Sir Charles Bell With the compliments of the author W. Y. Evans-Wentz. Jesus College Oxford 12 August 1927." Bell 1870-1945 the former British political representative in Tibet and a friend of the 13th Dalai Lama is thanked in the preface for assisting Evans-Wentz's research in Darjeeling. Bell's career as a Tibetologist began in 1900 when he was posted to Darjeeling. In 1908 he became political agent in Sikkim which made him Britain's senior diplomatic actor in Tibet. In this capacity he had close contact with the translator of this work Kazi Dawa-Samdup 1868-1922 a Buddhist scholar who served on the Dalai Lama's staff and interpreted for Bell in their meetings as well as with Sir John Woodroffe the writer of the foreword. Following his retirement in 1921 Bell "devoted the rest of his life to making Tibet intelligible to the wider world" ODNB writing several works on the region's culture and religion. Evans-Wentz finished this translation after Samdup's death devising an English title that could invoke comparison with the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The text popularized Tibetan Buddhism in the West and inspired the likes of W. B. Yeats James Joyce and Carl Jung. The latter wrote an extended commentary which was published in the 1957 third edition. This copy was part of the Bell bequest to the Royal Central Asian Society. The society's accession bookplate and printed library rules are laid down on the front endpaper. Octavo. Frontispiece printed on both sides with photographic halftones 6 plates line drawing. Title page printed in red and black.
