1929réf. 19234Washington D.C.: National Lumber Manufacturers Association 1929. Limited Edition. Wood. Near fine. A souvenir candlestick made from longleaf pine removed from the roof of the White House during the 1927 renovation. Base measures 4.25 inches height is 7.25 inches. Light wear from handling with visible longleaf pine grain throughout. Label affixed to the bottom panel with details about the provenance and craftsmanship. This candlestick was produced in 1929 by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association which purchased the largest quantity of the historic roof timbers at auction in March 1928 for $4.00 per foot. The original pine roof was laid in 1816 and remained in place for 112 years before being replaced. The salvaged lumber was used for souvenir gavels plaques furniture and related presentation pieces with the NLMA distributing candlesticks to promote the use of wood as a building material. Wayne Smith White House p. 40-43 A unique piece of White House history. The White House roof was reconstructed in 1927 following a $375000 congressional appropriation for the rebuilding of the roof attic and ceilings of the second story. The work began on March 14 1927 with a temporary wooden roof erected over the Executive Mansion to protect the interior while the old roof structure was removed. The original wooden trusses had been installed during the reconstruction of the White House after the British burning of Washington in 1814 and had supported the roof for 112 years. Although many of the old timbers remained in sound condition the attic had been overloaded for storage and portions of the truss system showed structural failure deflection and insect damage. Salvaged sections of the historic longleaf pine were later sold and repurposed into souvenirs. White House Timber 1929. National Lumber Manufacturers Association unknown

1939réf. 157547Shanghai: The Commercial Press Limited 1939. By one of the greatest western historians of Chinese art First edition first printing rarely found with the jacket of this historical study by John Calvin Ferguson a leading connoisseur of Chinese antiquities and one of the doyens of Chinese art history. "From the encounters between China and the West in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries John Ferguson reaped a harvest for himself and others that can only be described as exceptional" Netting p. 12. The ten extensively illustrated chapters address the major categories of Chinese artwork including bronzes stone monuments calligraphy painting jades ceramics architecture furniture textiles and what Ferguson calls "miscellaneous" pieces. Born in 1866 Ferguson travelled to China at the age of 21 to work as a missionary and quickly became well-known for his command of the Chinese language. Under the patronage of the Qing dynasty official Sheng Xuanhuai he became president of Shanghai's Nanyang Public School and advisor to the Ministry of Posts and Communications the Ministry of Commerce and the Imperial Chinese Railway Administration. In 1899 Ferguson bought Xinwenbao a small Shanghai newspaper and transformed it into one of the most important publications in the country. By the fall of the Qing in 1911 Ferguson was a leading western authority on Chinese art having developed a connoisseur's eye under the guidance of the Chinese collector Duanfang. In 1912 he was appointed to the committee charged with cataloguing the treasures of the Forbidden City in Beijing and he began working as a buyer for the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 1915 he moved to Beijing permanently and undertook three decades of scholarly research into Chinese art history until his departure in 1943. Following his death in 1945 his sizeable collections were donated to the Met and to Nanjing University. His influence still resonates in scholarship and connoisseurship today and his writings remain seminal. As the preface notes multiple developments in the 1930s including the opening of the Forbidden City's collections archaeological investigations and the appearance of several major collections on the market afforded Ferguson exciting material with which to enrich his account. A second edition now much more widely available was published by the Commercial Press in 1940. Quarto. With over 200 halftone plates. Original dark purple sand-grain cloth spine and front cover lettered in English and Chinese in gilt ornate gilt device on front board cream textured endpapers. With dust jacket. Three contemporary Shanghai price tickets on pastedowns. Cloth and gilt bright a little rubbing to extremities and device small tidemark on rear pastedown internally clean webbing slightly exposed at p. 75. A very good copy indeed in the very good dust jacket with tide marks to rear panel and flap professional Japanese tissue repairs internally. Lara Jaishree Netting A Perpetual Fire: John C.
