Dagli albori della fotografia ai pezzi contemporanei la collezione comprende più di 75.000 opere. Il MKG un museo di arti e mestieri ha iniziato a collezionare fotografia già verso la fine del XIX secolo e ha svolto un ruolo pionieristico come primo museo in Germania ad aprire le porte a questo mezzo.
