Her 1960 book Five California Architects has long been acknowledged as an indispensable classic and as Reyner Banham famously observed of her "no one can write about architecture in California without acknowledging her as the mother of us all." Piecing Together Los Angeles: An Esther McCoy Reader is the first anthology of McCoy's writing. It features a selection of some 70 pieces--ranging from her 1945 article "Schindler Space Architect" to "Arts & Architecture: Case Study Houses" a 1989 essay commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. From fiction for The New Yorker to seminal essays on new architectural forms McCoy charts the progressive edge of American idealism from the collective utopian spirit of Jazz Age Greenwich Village through the Depression and the war years to the optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. In preparing this volume writer and editor Susan Morgan extensively researched the McCoy papers at the Archives of American Art. Her editorial decisions were based in part on McCoy's original selections for an unrealized anthology solicited by W. W. Norton in 1968. Expanding on that project Morgan has included essays articles lectures correspondence memoirs and short stories that illuminate the breadth and complexity of McCoy's writing and the southern California region that inspired her groundbreaking work. 20120501 . 2012. 0615528236 . This handsome book slipcased in a cardboard box that itself recalls Gehry's furniture offers an in-depth analysis of his drawings during the two decades since computer generated design began to dominate architectural practice. Esther da Costa Meyer analyzes his idiosyncratic style his inspiration in the art of the past and of the present and his contributions to the art of architectural draftsmanship. As often as possible she allows Gehry to speak for himself.Da Costa Meyer argues that Gehry's sketches are only the first link in a long chain that passes through numerous models and computer renderings until the building is finally completed. She notes however that these whimsical works powerfully express Gehry's critique of the dogmatic strains of modernism prevalent when he began his career and his own attempts to bring humour emotion and drama back to architecture. . 2008. 0300122144 . Description: "Julius Shulman one of the great master of architectural photography is the preeminent recoreder of early California modernism. By 1927 when he was sixteen Shulman was already using the family Brownie box camera to document his Southern Californis surroundings and experiences; in 1936 his professional career was launched when he sent Richard Neutra some uncommissioned photographs of the architect's Kun House. Shulman went on to document the famous Case Study House Program architects included Charles and Ray Eames Pierre Koenig and Eero Saarinen and also the architecure of the 1930s through the 1980s especially that of Southern California but also country and worldwide. His subjects included the buildings of R. M. Schindler John Lautner Raphael Soriano Frank Lloyd Wright Mies van der Rohe Oscar Niemeyer among many others. Through his work Shulman defined the image of Los Angeles and framed the architecture of the time for a global audience. In addition to an overview of Shulman's career and photographic oevre this book emphasizes Shulman's method of "constructing" photographic views. These contructions which complemented his innate ability to compose striking photographs often transcends reality to capture the spirit time and place of a work of architecture. An analysis of architecture's visual presentation examines not only the media of the era--John Entenza's Arts & Architecture for instance--but also the work of Shulman's photographic contemporaries." -- with a bonus offer--; Julius Shulman one of the great master of architectural photography is the preeminent recoreder of early California modernism. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 144 pages; illustrated. -- with a bonus offer--; Reyner Banham once said of the great architecture historian Esther McCoy 1904-1989 that "no-one can write about architecture in California without acknowledging her as the mother of us all." Esther McCoy first moved to Los Angeles in 1932 commencing what would be a lifelong infatuation with the city's architecture and a vocation as the pre-eminent historian of west coast modernist architecture. Initially employed as a draftswoman in the studio of R.M. Schindler McCoy became intimately involved in the preservationist politics of Los Angeles contributing significant coverage of controversial slum clearances and spending nearly a decade campaigning to save Dodge House in West Hollywood from demolition. By 1960 McCoy had published Five California Architects her seminal study of the work of Irving Gill Charles and Henry Greene Bernard Maybeck and Rudolf Schindler. Through this pioneering volume and subsequent books essays and lectures McCoy established the terms by which we understand the history of California modernism today. Sympathetic Seeing: Esther McCoy and the Heart of American Modernist Architecture and Design is the first major catalogue to survey this distinguished figure's life and work. Highlighting the extraordinary range and significance of her presence in the field this volume affirms McCoy's place as a key figure in American architectural history. . 2012. 3869842652 . By means of her paintings bookworks and archival material she focuses on a day long ago in the life of her mother Hildegard during the economically volatile Weimar period in Germany. The buildings that he designed for the emperor of Austria and his courtiers reveal an element of theatricality—an element that author Esther Gordon Dotson probes in this attractive volume. In his architectural designs Fischer incorporated devices from ceremonial pageantry and scene design controlled lighting effects and a sense of dramatic progression in approaching and moving through a building. Dotson identifies these various elements in her close reading of Fischer's structures and splendid new photographs taken by Mark Richard Ashton bring them to life on the printed page. The author also delves into Fischer's past and his writings to explain the impact his awareness of architectural history his early employment by designers of street-festival pageants and his relationships with others involved in such staged productions had upon his architectural designs. Dotson guides readers in discovering the theatrical qualities in Fischer's buildings illuminating their conceptual liveliness variety drama and enduring beauty. . 2012. 0300166680 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - TEXT PRISTINE & UNMARKED - Description: RARE "ASSOCIATION COPY" -- Inscribed Signed & Dated By Author. Inscription is to artist Archibald Ziegler. -- Author and artist Esther Lurie 1913-1998 was imprisoned in the Kovno ghetto during the Nazi occupation 1941-44 along with other Jews. As soon as she entered the ghetto in mid-1941 Lurie began to sketch views of her new world. She has left behind a detailed written testimony of her life and work during World War II. This combination of literary and visual testimony make up a "living witness". They enable us to enter deeply into her life as an artist during this period under these difficult conditions. Lurie drew everywhere in the ghetto including the various workshops. Including a pottery workshop. During her visits there Lurie got the idea of asking the Jewish potters to prepare a number of jars for her. She would use these to conceal her art works if the situation worsened. After the deportation of 26 October 1943 in which 3000 ghetto inmates were removed to forced labor camps in Estonia Lurie hid her art collection approximately 200 drawings and watercolors in the large jars she had prepared in advance. In July 1944 as the Red Army approached Lithuania the ghetto was liquidated and those remaining were transferred to concentration camps and forced labor camps in Germany. The ghetto was set on fire and the buildings were blown up and burnt to prevent those hiding from escaping. Some people were burned to death in their hiding places. Esther Lurie was sent to Stutthof concentration camp leaving her hidden works behind. After the war some of her drawings were recovered surviving with the Ältestenrat's archive. Avraham Tory succeeded in rescuing 11 sketches and watercolors and 20 of the photographs of her works. During the Eichmann trial which took place in Jerusalem in 1961 Lurie's Second World War works were exhibited as part of the testimony - giving an "official authorization" from Israel's Supreme Court to the rich documentary value of her sketches and watercolors. This is in addition to their aesthetic value as objects of art. -- Archibald Ziegler 1903-1971 was a painter portrait sculptor and teacher. He studied art at Central School of Arts and Crafts and then from 1927-30 under Sir William Rothenstein at Royal College of Art. Ziegler was an excellent draughtsman and taught drawing and painting at St. Martin's School of Art. He also taught art history at Morley College London. He gave of his time to the Workers' Educational Association in the East End of London. There were numerous exhibitions of his work in London and the provinces including Adams Gallery 1935; Leger Gallery 1938 and Ben Uri Gallery in 1950. The Ben Uri also held a retrospective in 1955 and works by Ziegler are in their permanent collection.
