2008réf. 77709Yale University Press Distribution . New. Paperback. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 108 pp. With 47 ills. 25 col. . 22 x 15 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; World-renowned architect Frank Gehry considers drawing a conceptual tool: his fluid unpredictable sketches demonstrate how he searches for ideas with his pen. This handsome book slipcased in a cardboard box that itself recalls Gehry's furniture offers an in-depth analysis of his drawings during the two decades since computer generated design began to dominate architectural practice. Esther da Costa Meyer analyzes his idiosyncratic style his inspiration in the art of the past and of the present and his contributions to the art of architectural draftsmanship. As often as possible she allows Gehry to speak for himself.Da Costa Meyer argues that Gehry's sketches are only the first link in a long chain that passes through numerous models and computer renderings until the building is finally completed. She notes however that these whimsical works powerfully express Gehry's critique of the dogmatic strains of modernism prevalent when he began his career and his own attempts to bring humour emotion and drama back to architecture. . 2008. 0300122144 . 1910réf. 21516San Francisco presumed 1910. Fine. A striking dimply composed full body watercolor portrait of a young Chinese American by Esther Hunt an artist who specialized in Oriental subjects and above all else the denizens of San Francisco's Chinatown. The young woman is in traditional dress with a colorful parasol above her head positioned like a halo. The parasol is the only prop and it provides a sweet contrast to the "debutant". The painting is indeed titled "The Debutante". We think the title was intended a little tongue-in-cheek as the subject looks to us as if she is pre-adolescent. That said the title should not be deemed in any way snarky or sarcastic; an artist might have entitled a painting of such a young person of any background standing in this manner similarly. And here one could interpret the girl's inscrutable expression and stillness as suggestive of a maturity beyond her years. The visible portrait or frame window is 20 by 17 cm. The frame itself 33.5 by 30 cm. The frame is quite thick -- not quite 6 cm. We don't know when the painting was done but probably early 20th Century. We arbitrarily have dated it 1910. Hunt took an unconventional approach to marketing her paintings. She often sold through Gumps a well-known San Francisco-based jewelry and housewares store still in business today. One should not think she was lesser as an artist as a result of that. She certainly had the best art education conceivable. She studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute and the New York Art Students League and at the latter under William Merritt Chase. unknown books

1906réf. 21246San Francisco presumed 1906. A charming painting by Esther Hunt an artist who specialized in Oriental subjects and above all else the denizens of San Francisco's Chinatown. And not to be shortchanged is the Orientalist frame obviously custom-made for this particular painting and is itself a pleasurable decorative object in and of itself but also working with the painting and as a good frame should do catching the eye and directing it to the painting. The painting here is a quintessential Hunt portrait and its custom frame is of a type one finds with other Hunt paintings -- we don't know whether she also designed the frame but we suspect she indeed did that as well. We date the painting to a penciled note on the back which indicates that the painting was purchased at Gumps on April 16th 1906. Gumps is a well-known San Francisco-based jewelry and housewares store still in business today. This reinforces our sense that Hunt was a painter who sold her paintings in a wide variety of venues outside of tony art galleries. That said she studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute and the New York Art Students League and at the latter under William Merritt Chase. The painting on canvas visible portion is 65 by 40 cm. The frame was done by a highly skilled artisan. Unfortunately we do not know who created it nor whether Esther Hunt had a hand in its design. All we can tell is that it was created for this painting and it is contemporary with the painting or put another way it is probably the only frame that ever housed this painting. The frame at its tallest including the wooden rings on top is 82 cm tall and except for the top roof shaped piece the frame is 54 cm wide. unknown books
