2017réf. 5697Amsterdam: FW: Books 2017. First edition signed in Paris in 2017 by the author Dutch photographer and visual artist Esther Hovers. This photo book is about 'intelligent' surveillance systems; or facial recognition cameras. These are cameras that are said to be able to detect deviant behaviour within public spaces. The book - in leporello / accordion folded format - centres on the question of 'normal' behaviour. It aims to raise this question by basing the project on eight different "anomalies". These anomalies are signs in body language and movement that could indicate criminal intent. It is through these anomalies that the algorithms are built and cameras are able to detect deviant behaviour. The work consists of photographs and pattern drawings forming an analysis of different settings in and around the business district of Brussels. At the time this book was named Best of 2017 by Photobookstore Magazine and was shortlisted for the Aperture Paris Photobook Award 2018. In an as new condition. 48 pages photography in colour. 340 x 240 mm 13½ x 9½ inches. 340 x 240 mm 13½ x 9½ pouces. Conforme au numéro OCLC : 1325192902 FW: Books unknown

Faith in the familiar is an ethnography of religious change in the Netherlands discussing Catholicism and popular forms of New Age. It focuses on the location of religion in local life and how people relate to religious authority. OCLC Faith in the Familiar is an ethnography of religious change in the Netherlands a country that has moved from strongly pillarized to strongly secularist in the space of fifty years. This book shows how people look back on this but also how Catholic rituals continue to play a role in the reproduction of place. Furthermore it shows how forms of spiritualism and new age have become part of a pluralistic local religious landscape and are used to create new ways of relating to religious authority and to reshape personal relationships. Situating itself within general theories of religious change in Western Europe it offers a contribution to this discussion from an angle that is often neglected focusing on locality rather than on globalization; on what happens to ‘old’ religion rather than on new religious trends on popular forms of ‘spirituality’ rather than on middle class and highbrow spirituality.
