'Within this thesis I present my musical development as an improvisor during a two-year period in America. In order to gain an understanding which traverses both inner and outer worlds I use my dreams throughout the same period as a foundation of symbolic interpretation. As we have no cultural myth as an outside reference within the Western world through which to appraise a reality other than that of linear time the dreams and symbols of the individual come to the fore as a source of symbolic and mythical insight. In the first part I discuss how our present day culture inhibits creativity through its emphasis on the rational empiricism of the conscious mind. This is at the expense of emotional and spiritual truths arising from the unconscious. In the second part I look at how the discipline of improvisation helped me to move beyond and against these repressive cultural elements. In the third part I am involved in searching for ways in which both improvisation and conscious order can be held in balance.' Contents: Abstract; Prologue; Introduction Systemic Interpretation Symbolic Interpretation Myth-Making and the Individual The Jungian Concept of Self Present Day Evaluation of Western Music; Dislocated Images Loss of the Feminine Taking Revenge Upon the Child Returning to the Child; The Clown Returning to the Wilderness Down to the Ocean The Shadow A Floating Dream; Life in Balance To Where Do We Return The Baby Demands Its Own And So the Search Goes On; Bibliography.
