Principally an actress and director Judith Malina co-founded The Living Theatre a radical political theatre troupe that gained prominence in New York City and Paris during the 1950s and 60s. She worked closely with her husband Julian Beck who is responsible for the illustration on the collection’s cover. The daughter of Polish Jewish parents Malina and her family fled Europe due to the rise in Nazism in the 1920s. As a result her poetry is preoccupied with themes of memory legacy and homeland.
