The first edition of this continuation by the English architect Isaac Ware 1704-1766 of William Kent's Designs of Inigo Jones. Illustrated with 53 engraved plates including 5 double-page designs. Published in c.1731-1733 without imprint and with the engraved cartouche to the title verso inscribed 'Most of these Designs are already Executed & the rest are at Burlington House'. 'Ware attribute many but not all of the designs shown in the plates to Inigo Jones: six chimney pieces one staircase one theater seven ceilings piers at Windsor Castle an altarpiece and screen in Somerset House Chapel a stable and a simple rectangular garden "Seat" with Doric columns in antis. William Kent is represented by more designs than Jones: 11 chimney pieces the dining room at Houghton another room designed for the Duke of Grafton an obelisk for Shotover and a variety of garden seats and pavilions: a "Room" at Shotover two "Rooms" at Claremont "Seats" for Sir Charles Hotham and Lord Cobham and a domed "Temple." Kent's garden "Rooms" are simple in plan and based on octagonal square or circular figures. The building at Shotover is domed and the entrance of one "Room" at Claremont is framed by battered architraves. The largest garden structure is the two-story domed "Seat" depicted in Plates 43 and 44 five windows wide on the ground story front by hexastyle pedimented Doric portico with three rooms inside on the ground floor. There is one design by Lord Burlington for the piers at the entrance to Chiswick House Plate 25. The design for an "Alcove" Plate 23 is unattributed' Archer. réf. 107098London Printed for G. and B. Whittaker 1823. . First edition. Folio. Contemporary half-calf binding spine rubbed; browning to some pages; text in English with occasional Hebrew; 5 vi-xiv 5 2-230 pp. A work on the history and theory of music by the composer of the famous Hebrew Melodies. Isaac Nathan c. 1791-1864 was a Jewish-English composer musicologist journalist and self-publicist. Son of a synagogues cantor Nathan was classically trained by Domenico Corri who was the student of legendary vocal teacher Nicola Porpora. In 1813 he conceived the idea of publishing settings of tunes from synagogue usage and persuaded Lord Byron to provide the words for these. The result was his famous Hebrew Melodies 1823. The work used for the most part melodies from the synagogue service though few if any of these were in fact handed down from the ancient service of the Temple in Jerusalem as Nathan claimed. To assist sales Nathan recruited the famous Jewish singer John Braham to place his name on the title page in return for a share of profits although Braham in fact took no part in the creation of the Melodies. The work proved to be extremely successful was reprinted numerous times and brought Nathan some fame and notoriety. Nathan was later to claim that he had been appointed as singing teacher to the Princess Royal Princess Charlotte of Wales and music librarian to the Prince Regent later George IV. There is no evidence for this although this this work is dedicated to George IV with his permission. In 1841 Nathan emigrated to Sydney Australia where he frequently lectured and where he rendered great service in developing musical talent. He acted as music adviser both to the synagogue and to the Roman Catholic cathedral in Sydney. Nathan was the first to research and transcribe indigenous Australian music and also set lyrics by the poet Eliza Hamilton Dunlop those were published in his Australian Melodies series in 1842. London, Printed for G. and B. Whittaker, 1823. unknown

1738réf. 69154Connecticut: Printed for the Travelling Booksellers 1798. An Unsophisticated Copy with Contemporary American Provenance A rare early American printing of the apocryphal autobiography of Ambrose Gwinett a popular adventure narrative in the United States and Britain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The true first publication date and author have never been established although DNB attributes authorship to Isaac Bickerstaff noting a copy at the British Museum bearing the following notation from an early owner: "Dr. Percy told me that he had heard that this pamphlet was a mere fiction written by Mr. Bickerstaffe the dramatic poet." Isaac Bickerstaff 1733–1812 was an Irish playwright and librettist whose farces and comic operas were popular in the late 18th century. The earliest dated edition is 1770 and the earliest American editions include a Boston printing from 1782 located in only one copy at the Library of Congress and Norwich & Philadelphia printings from 1784. Although there is no place of publication on the present copy a comparison against a copy of The Prodigal Daughter Hartford: For the Travelling Booksellers 1799 supports the attribution to an American printer most compellingly in the use of the same type and design for both imprint lines. The last page bears the ownership signature of the teenage David Sikes Jr. 1788–1864 a descendent of Richard Sikes one of the first colonial settlers of Suffield Connecticut: "David Sikes Jr.Of Suffield Connecticut Feb 14 1803." ESTC and OCLC locate copies at the American Antiquarian Society Library Company of Philadelphia Cornell and Yale University and there is one copy of this edition recorded in Rare Book Hub at a Henkels sale in 1916. Stab stitch binding sewn into larger contemporary blue wrappers. Wrappers coming loose somewhat soiled and rumpled with later ink stamp to rear wrapper. Tanned scattered soiling and chipping to edges short edge tears not costing legibility; last leaf detached with minor losses naively sewn onto the inside of the rear wrapper to charming effect contemporary ownership inscription of David Sikes Jr. A good copy in unsophisticated condition.
