réf. 341187NY: Farrar Straus Giroux 1968. first edition with faint rubbing at extremities and faint imprint of paper clip at top of front panel. fine hardcover fine jacket Collects 16 tales by this 1978 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature. "When Singer was almost fifteen his mother had a dream: in it she saw her father his face radiant as though bound for Heaven . The dream proved prophetic; Singer's grandfather had indeed died. Singer attributes his lifelong belief in the occult partly to the accuracy of his mother's dreams . a recurring theme in his work is a reminder to people 'that there are powers in the world we don't know that the supernatural is here among us . Singer's stories are compulsively readable; they unwind with a dazzling swiftness . An incisive psychological awareness permeates his pages"- Sullivan Horror Encyclo pp 388-90. King DM p 391 . 1978réf. 000897New York: Farrar Straus Giroux 1978. First Edition & First Printing . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Octavo. New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux 1978. First Edition / First Printing. Signed inscribed and dated May 29 1981 by the author on the ffep to Erwin Leiser. Octavo 277 pp. Fine copy in a near-fine dustjacket showing a bit of small-scale edgewear. At the time of its release Singer's first novel in six years Shosha is a love story in typically offbeat Singer style. Originally written in Yiddish as were almost all most of his novels Shosha's English title is the name of a childhood love of the protagonist. An aspiring writer in 1930's Poland his career is being given a boost by a visiting American couple and he's essaying the romancing not only of the American wife but of several other women as well when he again encounters Shosha. Been there done that though not in Poland. Erwin Leiser 1923-1996 was a highly-regarded German-born journalist and director of trenchant documentaries both historical and political in character having especially to do with the Nazis and the holocaust the latter being a documentary topic for which he may have been the first director. A handsome example. L53n Farrar Straus Giroux hardcover
1950réf. 000365New York: Gnome Press 1950. First Edition . Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Cartier Edd jacket. New York: Gnome Press 1950. First Edition. Introduction by Willy Ley. Edited by Martin Greenberg this copy signed inscribed and presented by him to Arthur C. Clarke. Octavo 351 pp. Purple cloth-backed gray cloth boards with silver spine titling and blindstamped launching-spaceship and star motif on purple margin. Pictorial dustjacket by sci-fi illustration luminary Edd Cartier. A near fine book with only minor page edge soiling and a trace of partial spine fade in a Very Good jacket showing light perimeter wear. Singular copy inscribed and presented to Arthur C. Clarke by Greenberg with provenance of unimpeachable order accompanying the book. An increasingly classic collection of short stories by some of the now-timeless sci-fi names. Willy Ley: "Here is a different type of anthology. This book taken in its entirety tells a story: the conquest of space. Moving from man's first attempt to reach the moon to the exploration of the ends of the universe these stories are among the finest ever published." - Willy Ley. Hailed by critics at the time of its publication as a quantum leap forward in both quality and concept for science fiction anthologies Martin Greenberg's thematically edited Men Against the Stars is a collection of twelve lengthy stories whose authors read like a Who's Who of Golden Age sci-fi including Isaac Asimov Murray Leinster A.E. Van Vogt L. Ron Hubbard Hubbard's "When Shadows Fall" is here and E.M. Hull. Not a slap-dash aggregation to get to the printer quickly Greenberg's collection was a thoroughly contemplated and planned project a selection of the very finest available stories on theme ranging back as far as 1939. Nicely complimented by a Cartier's funky pure genre period stylization jacket. A sci-fi presentation copy of the highest sort that of a veteran and astute editor to a future superstar. Arthur C. Clarke's reputation at the time was already becoming established and Greenberg shows the admiration in his skilled critical eye for Clarke's sci-fi talents in his presentation remark.
