"General Anthony Lamb the son of Gen. John Lamb was desirous that his father's exploits in the Revolution should be commemorated in a book and his brother-in-law Isaac Q. Leake undertook from the family papers and other sources to prepare this memorial volume. The family was parsimonious of money and Leake was furnished with a capital of $380 only with which to procure an engraved portrait and have the printing done. The interest in General Lamb was not sufficient to create a brisk sale and the work therefore did not pay. An effort was made to sell the edition to Gen. Anthony for the debt remaining upon it but without effect"--Munsell Imprints p.41. unknown

1986rif. 168Isaac Asimov - born in Soviet Russia in 1920 in the Smolensk region in a Jewish family. World famous science fiction writer author of about 500 works mostly fiction and popular science. Some terms from his works - robotics positronic psychohistory - have entered English and other languages. He is a multiple winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards. In the Anglo-American literary tradition Isaac Asimov together with Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein is considered to be one of the 'Big Three' science fiction writers. He was a very popular author in the Soviet Union. Perhaps the first work by Isaac Asimov published in the Soviet Union was the 1958 short story The Feeling of Power published translated by Zinaide Bobyr in two magazines at once: Nauka i Zhizn #11 and Iskatel in #6 of 1962. In 1964 for the first time in the USSR Isaac Asimov's solo collection a series of short stories I Robot translated by Alexey Jordan where the world-famous Three Laws of Robotics were formulated was published. In the 1960s Asimov was published extensively in Soviet journals. In 1966 the Library of Modern Fiction series published Isaac Asimov's novel The End of Eternity translated by Yuri Estrin. In the 1970s-80s other works by Asimov were published in magazines and in separate editions. However the Soviet publishing system was rather slow with each publication requiring a separate authorisation. Fiction fans could not wait for literary officials to make a decision to publish another work. Therefore underground translations of Western authors published in samizdat in typewritten copies and distributed privately began as early as the 1960s. This process became particularly active in the late 1970s and early 1980s when new copying technology became available. Translations were often unnamed for reasons of translator safety. Hundreds of works of Western fiction were translated in a short period of time. Then when in the late 1980s and early 1990s it became possible to print books of this kind in official printing houses some of the samizdat translations were printed. However not all of them! Therefore in the bibliography of Asimov's translations into Russian the first translation of 'Robots and Empire' is listed only in 2003! Thus the samizdat translation went unnoticed and is not listed anywhere. It survived in a small number of copies which did not end up in libraries and on the shelves of collectors. The translation is a photocopy from a typewritten copy 435 pages of text. In good condition. Rarity. Not available in libraries worldwide. Samizdat
1848rif. 026108Boston: Little Brown 1848. First . Hardcover. Near Fine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Complete with alll 16 plates 2 of which are attributed to Godfrey N. Frankenstein 1820-1873. Original dark brown cloth binding with original decorative gilt titles on the front cover. This particular example also boasts the ownership signature Fully investigated & referenced of Hiester Henry Muhlenberg 1812-1886 He was a member of the distinguished Muhlenberg family of Pennsylvania. And the bookplate where he/his family apparently donated the volume many decades ago 'The Reading Public Museum and Art Gallery' both on the inside of the front cover. Inside the rear cover is a small trapazoidal piece of manilla card where assumed an inventory card was kept. Book was clearly NOT for public viewing. Plates are in lovely near fine to fine condition with none of the usual foxing as seen in most examples. All are perfect for framing or to keep whole for propserity. The corners & spine ends a bit worn. A very nice example of this cornerstone to any White Mountains Book Collection. Oakes was drowned in the same year of this publication 1848 somewhere between East Boston & Boston. One wonders what he would have done to top this masterpiece had he lived. Bents page 1 Second listing of 'The Classics'. The plates are as follows: 1 "The White Mountains" 2 "Mount Crawford" 3 "The Notch of the White Mountains" 4 "The Lower Cascade of the Notch" 5 "The Gate of the Notch" 6 "The Falls of the Amonoosuck" 7 "The Granite Cliffs of the Falls" two views 8 "The Franconia Notch" 9 "Profile Mountain at Franconia" 10 "The Profile Rock" 11 "The Basin in Lincoln N.H." 12 "The Flume in Lincoln N.H." 13 "Nancy`s Bridge" 14 "Mt. Crawford from the Notch" two views 15 "Mount Washington" two views and 16 "Mt. Washington over Tuckerman`s Ravine." Come by for a look! Little Brown, hardcover
