Paris: C. Motte, 1820-1821 hardcover

1896Best.-Nr. 541FIRST EDITION. 484 × pp. folding map. Spine lettering dull and slight wear to the spine ends a solid very good or a little better copy of a now very sought-after book. The biography of L'Ouverture by a noted African American clergyman and missionary. Text block is clean and tight except for a light damp stain along very top of paper edges not affecting text block or plates. Binding has some minor spotting and rubbing wear. Lettering on spine is faded. Still a Very Nice Copy of this rare book with the fold out map in Very Good Condition. A comprehensive biography which details the life and times of the Haitian revolutionary though this work heavily translates and draws from Thomas Prosoer Gragnon-Lacostes 1877 French biography offering a deeply researched account of the Haitian Revolution and Toussaont Louvertures life. A nice copy of a very rare and highly sought-after historical biography. François Dominique Toussaint Louverture born into slavery in Saint-Domingue became a pivotal figure in the struggle for freedom from colonial oppression in the late 18th century. His early life was marked by a unique upbringing that included education from priests and a godfather who recognized his talents allowing him to rise through the ranks on a plantation. By 1791 amidst a backdrop of social and racial tensions he emerged as a leader during a massive slave rebellion against plantation owners. Toussaint's military acumen earned him the nickname "Louverture" which reflects his strategic skills in warfare. As a leader he sought to abolish slavery and create a prosperous society for all inhabitants of Hispaniola ultimately drafting a constitution that minimized French authority while maintaining the colony's ties to France. However his governance faced challenges particularly from Napoleon Bonaparte who dispatched troops to restore slavery. After a fierce struggle Toussaint was captured and exiled to France where he died in prison in 1803. Despite his controversial legacy Toussaint Louverture is celebrated as a liberator and a symbol of resilience and the quest for equality influencing the subsequent declaration of Haitian independence. His life and actions remain a testament to the complexities of the struggle for freedom and self-governance EBSCO Kuhn Paul E. 2024. Ward & Cobb, Lockport hardcover

Hayhurst chemist and bibliophile with his bookplate to the front free endpaper. Hayhurst's extensive collection included well-preserved 18th-century bindings. Old bookseller's label of Kerr Richardson Glasgow to rear pastedown. Some light browning generally an excellent copy of this important Enlightenment work in handsome contemporary French binding. Originally attributed to Diderot with whom Toussaint was a close collaborator for the early volumes of the Encyclopédie Les Mœurs was the first work to openly formulate the morality of secular and humanitarian happiness and under the guise of a roman à clef to unapologetically promote a universal virtue freed from religion. It shook the foundations of French society and upon publication in 1748 and was promptly prosecuted banned and burned by the French court of justice. After its publication Toussaint was forced to free to Bruxelles and thence to Prussia where Frederick the Great offered his protection. The book had at least ten printings in the first year 1748 and thirty-eight by 1800. Along with Montesquieu's De l'esprit des loix 1748 and the Encyclopédie prospectus 1750 Toussaint's Les Mœurs was influential in crystallising the enlightenment ideas which would go on to influence the French Revolution. Due to the book being banned upon its publication and reprinted numerous times in 1748 there appears to be little consensus regarding which is a true first edition. A copy at Alde appeared in 2020 and was described as "une des premières éditions si ce n'est la première" and another copy printed on large paper with an identical title-page and frontispiece to ours appeared at Christies in 2022 and was described as an "édition originale". 1748. unknown
