1881rif. CAT0180New York 1881. 4 pp single 9 ½ x 7 ½ inch leaf folded. Very Good. An important document from early in the career of Washington Gladden a key figure in the Social Gospel and Progressive movements. He writes the board of the State Street Congregational Church explaining the reasons for his resignation which include the spiritual bankruptcy of the congregation his poor health and the inability of the church to pay his salary. Of these subjects it's the spiritual health of the congregation that seems to trouble him the most. He writes: "Spirituality is at a very low ebb. I would never be satisfied with laboring year after year in any church with no signs of success. it saddens me today that the tokens of good have been very few. I had hoped and longed for spiritual prosperity among you." An interesting document that sheds light on Gladden's reasons for leaving his first position. The American National Biography states his reasons for leaving as a "mental breakdown" though this letter may suggest that he had thought out his decision to a greater degree. Partial tears at folds but still very good. unknown books
1788rif. 002032London: Printed by L. Wayland; and sold by Wills Button and Sleep 1788. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Small octavo. pp. 54. Complete text block. An exceptionally rare deeply personal late-Georgian travel narrative and religious meditation focusing on the earliest days of Kentish sea-bathing resort culture.Crucially the title page features the prominent crisp handwritten contemporary owner's signature of "Mary Ann Robson 1788" matching the exact year of the book's publication. Note: Strictly unrelated to the later 19th-century figure of the same birth name.Presented in a slightly later bespoke full red leather fine binding. The spine features a neat black leather title label finished with gilt titles. Both boards uniquely embellished with central black leather diamond overlays each stamped with a gilt emblem of a ship at sea-an homage to the text's narrative detailing the author's sea voyage from London to Kent aboard the ship "Friends". The boards are completed with decorative gilt borders and all edges of the text block are finished in full gilt. The custom full-leather binding remains in very good condition.Internally the 18th-century paper is in very good condition showing just a little natural light age-toning and the odd minor mark as expected. A beautiful collector-grade example of a highly elusive historically significant work of regional topography and medical transit. Printed by L. Wayland; and sold by Wills, Button, and Sleep hardcover
