1870ref. 9400Harrisburg PA 1870. Broadside. 8.5" x 14." Printed document accomplished in manuscript. Old folds; docketed on the verso; a very crisp document. This is a manuscript copy of the original 1837 document issued from the office of the Surveyor General of Pennsylvania in 1870; signed and accomplished by J. M. Campbell who would go one to be a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1877-1887 though not continuously. Quite handsome manuscript map in red and black offering the boundaries of Peter Ritner's land "in trust for the 'Clearfield Coke & Iron Company.'" The land is bounded by parcels owned by John Keating Levy Coffin and John Bausman. This survey is for a parcel "situate on the North Side of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River Covington Township Clearfield County . . . containing eight-eight acres & one hundred and fifty-three perches" surveyed by John Taylor in 1837. This copy signed by Survey General John Campbell and dated 26 October 1870 with the debossed paper seal of his office. Peter Ritner c.1795-1861 was an interesting man though he did not rise to the prominence that his brother Joseph Ritner enjoyed as governor of Pennsylvania from 1835-1839. Peter served with the Volunteer Rifle company in the first Brigade Seventh Division under Colonel James Fenton. He was with the company when they crossed the Niagara River into Canada in 1814. He was for a time deputy sheriff and sheriff of Cumberland County PA. This land was surveyed about the time Ritner with John Say was part owner of the second iteration of Karthaus Iron Works rebranded "Clearfield Coal and Iron Company." Ultimately a failing proposition it nevertheless has the distinction of being the first iron furnace in the United States to use coke instead of coal. An interesting document. unknown
