An exhaustive account of the actions and legal proceedings surrounding the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue Case of 1858 an important event in abolitionist history. On 13 September 1858 a federal marshal in Oberlin Ohio detained the runaway slave John Price from Kentucky in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Seeking to skirt conflict with Oberlin locals-many of whom were abolitionists-the officer transported Price to Wellington Ohio. Oberlin residents learned of the officer's actions and met the men in Wellington in an effort to free Price. After first attempting to liberate him peacefully with the assistance of fellow abolitionists from Wellington the party ultimately seized him by force-first returning him to Oberlin and then escorting him to Canada. Tragically however Price died shortly after his arrival. In the wake of the rescue thirty-seven of those involved in rescuing Price were indicted by a federal grand jury-although only two were actually tried in federal court. Ohio authorities for their part arrested the federal marshal and those who assisted him in apprehending Price. The conviction of the two rescuers occasioned fervent protests among Ohio abolitionists and the divisive effect of the case had a significant impact on Ohio politics in the years immediately following. The implication from the author is that the task of converting a typically winning position into a full point or converting a drawing position into half-a-point is relatively straightforward. "In 1270 a scholarly Jewish merchant called Jacob d'Ancona set out on a voyage from Italy. A year later he arrived in China at the coastal metropolis of Zaitun the "City of Light" now known as Quanzhou four years before Marco Polo arrived at Xanadu in 1275. Nothing was known of this epochal journey until 1990 when David Selbourne was shown d'Ancona's account of his travels a remarkable manuscript that had been hidden from public view for more than seven centuries. Eventually translated and edited by Selbourne and published in Great Britain in October 1997 as The City of Light the account was praised as providing an unparalleled insight into life in the medieval world. Controversy followed. Selbourne had pledged to the manuscript's owner that he would not reveal its whereabouts and that raised doubts about its authenticity. As a result of U.S. sinologists' criticism of plans for American publication the first edition was canceled. Now a year later Birch Lane Press happily publishes the controversial work. Criticisms of the textual evidence of d'Ancona's account have been answered by Selbourne. Most notably other academics--particularly and significantly in China--have come to the support of d'Ancona's account. The work is to be published in a Chinese translation. Vivid and insightful this account has great historical significance. It not only describes the adventures of a medieval trader but also comments on Chinese society and manners through the eyes of a European man of learning. The City of Light brings spectacularly to life d'Ancona's encounter with one of the world's great civilizations. Citadel Press / Kensington Publishing Corp hardcover books

A fine copy in a fine jacket. 2017 Hard Cover. xii 253 pp. Homesteading the Plains offers a bold new look at the history of homesteading overturning what for decades has been the orthodox scholarly view. The authors begin by noting the striking disparity between the public’s perception of homesteading as a cherished part of our national narrative and most scholars’ harshly negative and dismissive treatment. Homesteading the Plains reexamines old data and draws from newly available digitized records to reassess the current interpretation’s four principal tenets: Homesteading was a minor factor in farm formation with most western farmers purchasing their land; most homesteaders failed to prove their claims; the homesteading process was rife with corruption and fraud; and homesteading caused Indian land dispossession. Using data instead of anecdotes and focusing mainly on the nineteenth century Homesteading the Plains demonstrates that the first three tenets are wrong and the fourth only partially true. In short the public’s perception of homesteading is perhaps more accurate than the one scholars have constructed. Homesteading the Plains provides the basis for an understanding of homesteading that is startlingly different from the current scholarly orthodoxy. University of Nebraska Press hardcover books

Wellington is located thirty-six miles southwest of Cleveland; Oberlin is nine miles north of Wellington. In January 1856 a negro slave called John was missing from a plantation in Mason county Kentucky. In August 1856 a friend of the owner recognized John at Oberlin and with the aid of friends from Kentucky arrested him with the intention of taking him back. They took him to Wellington where he was rescued by a large body of persons from Oberlin and Wellington---hence the title. Thirty-seven of the rescuers were indicted by the State and confined for many months in the Cleveland jail while the trial progressed. They were finally acquitted and great was the rejoicing.
