1831Best.-Nr. 666311831. Lehrb. Chem. 4/1. - Aus dem Schwedischen übersetzt von F. Wöhler. - Dresden in der Arnold'schen Buchhandlung. 1831 8° 8 703 1 pp. Pappband d.Zt. First German Edition with the ExLibris von Johannes Büttner! Baron Jöns Jacob Berzelius 1779-1848 "was the first person to make the distinction between organic compounds those containing carbon and inorganic compounds. "Organische Chemie" Organisk Kemi. "Berzelius stated in 1810 that living things work by some mysterious "vital force" a hypothesis called vitalism. Vitalism had first been proposed by prior researchers although Berzelius contended that compounds could be distinguished by whether they required any organisms in their synthesis organic compounds or whether they did not inorganic compounds. However in 1828 Friedrich Wöhler accidentally obtained urea an organic compound by heating ammonium cyanate. This showed that an organic compound such as urea could be prepared synthetically and not exclusively by living organisms. Berzelius corresponded with Wöhler on the urea synthesis findings. However the notion of vitalism continued to persist until further work on abiotic synthesis of organic compounds provided substantial evidence against vitalism. " wiki In 1838 Jöns Jacob Berzelius became the first scientist to use the term "protein" a word that has become a cornerstone of biochemistry. "Wöhler is considered a pioneer of organic chemistry because of his synthesis of oxalic acid by hydrolysis of dicyan in 1824 and of urea from ammonium cyanate on 22 February 1828. These syntheses opened up the field of biochemistry as for the first time substances previously known only from living organisms could be artificially produced from "inanimate" matter. At first these in vitro syntheses were hardly noticed by chemists. With the increasing success of chemists in the field of organic synthetic chemistry however Wöhler's synthesis was seen as the beginning of this branch of chemistry and thus a "creation myth" of organic chemistry developed around the urea synthesis which can still be found today in many chemistry textbooks but also in historical accounts. "wiki "If one compares this work with Liebig's book the new path that Liebig took becomes clear. Berzelius had compiled the existing experimental material according to organs. Liebig on the other hand tried to present the large interrelationships of the processes in the living animal organism. Nutrition respiration the production of mechanical work and animal heat as well as the formation of the protein-rich "structures" of the body i.e. the tissues and organs are traced back to chemical processes and explained in their context." 1914Best.-Nr. 9391914. J. Pharm. exp. Ther. 5/3. - 1914 pp.275-316 orig. Broschur. PRECURSOR TO THE MODERN DAY DIALYSIS MACHINE! Rare Offprint "Reprinted from The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics."! "Received for publication December 18 1913". "Together with Leonard George Rowntree 1883-1859 and Benjamin Bernard Turner 1971-1945 John Jacob Abel 1857-1938 devised what they called a "vividiffusion" apparatus consisting of a series of tubes surrounded by fluid. They first demonstrated the apparatus at the Physiological Congress in Groningen in 1914. By allowing arterial blood to enter at one end of the connection and later return to circulation through the venous connection after dialysis they were able to demonstrate the existence of free amino acids in blood. By isolating these amino acids from blood circulation Abel conducted various subsequent researches on the structure of proteins in the blood. Not only did Abel use the apparatus for his research work he also realized the great clinical potential such dialysis machine would have on managing the damaging effects of renal failure. The vividiffusion apparatus Abel devised is the precursor to the modern day dialysis machine." He summarized his work in a paper published in 1913 "On the Removal of Diffusable Substances from the Circulating Blood by Means of Dialysis" by Transfusion Science. John Jacob Abel 1857-1938 was an American biochemist and pharmacologist. He established the pharmacology department at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893 and then became America's first full-time professor of pharmacology. During his time at Hopkins he made several important medical advancements especially in the field of hormone extraction. In addition to his laboratory work he founded several significant scientific journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. 1854Best.-Nr. 51129Brussels: Comptoir des éditeurs 1854. Bourgery Jean-Baptiste Marc 1797-1849 and Nicolas Henri Jacob 1782-1871. Anatomie élémentaire en vingt planches representant chacune un sujet dans son entier à la proportion de demi-nature . . . Atlas only. Elephant folio. Title-leaf and 20 lithographed plates most hand-colored. Brussels: Meline Cans et Cie; Comptoir des Éditeurs 1854. 888 x 600 mm. 20th-century quarter morocco boards slight wear. A few marginal tears repaired minor dampstaining but very good. Later edition first published in both Paris and Brussels in 1836 of this set of very large anatomical plates that were intended to be mounted on the walls of dissection rooms. All editions are extremely rare-OCLC does not cite any copies of the 1854 edition. This is the only copy of any edition of this work that we have handled in over 50 years of trading. The work was originally accompanied by a small 20-page pamphlet of text that is not present here. The impressive plates in this atlas reproduce the illustrations in Bourgery and Jacob's Traité complet d'anatomie at a much larger scale than their counterparts in the Traité-roughly half life-size. Some plates were lithographed in Paris; others in Brussels. Plates I and II are devoted to osteology and syndesmology; plates III - VIII to myology and aponeurology; plates IX-XIV to angiology; plates XV-XVII to neurology; plates XVIII-XIX to the digestive system; and plate XX to the reproductive organs. The plates were originally sold separately; uncolored versions were priced at 6 francs and colored versions at 12 francs. Currently two uncolored plates from this series are on the market for about $1300. . Comptoir des éditeurs unknown
