The Mishneh Torah is the only Medieval-era work that details all of Jewish observance including those laws that are only applicable when the Holy Temple is in existence. Its title is an appellation originally used for the Biblical book of Deuteronomy and its subtitle "Book of the Strong Hand" derives from its subdivision into fourteen books: the numerical value fourteen when represented as the Hebrew letters Yod 10 Dalet 4 forms the word yad "hand". Maimonides intended to provide a complete statement of the Oral Law so that a person who mastered first the Written Torah and then the Mishneh Torah would not need to refer to any other legal text. Contemporary reaction was mixed with strong and immediate opposition focusing on the absence of sources and the belief that the work appeared to be intended to supersede study of the Talmud. Maimonides responded to these criticisms and the Mishneh Torah endures as an influential work in Jewish religious thought. According to several authorities a decision may not be rendered in opposition to a view of Maimonides even when he differed from the understanding of the Talmudic passage for in such cases the presumption was that the words of the Talmud were incorrectly interpreted. Likewise: "One must follow Maimonides even when the latter opposed his teachers since he surely knew their views and if he decided against them he must have disapproved their interpretation. However despite his stature in Yemen and the Sephardic world the Rabbinic authorities from the 13th century onwards did not base their legal rulings and interpretations of Halicha on Maimonides. The Mishneh Torah was compiled between 1170 and 1180 4930-4940 while Maimonides was living in Egypt and is regarded as Maimonides' magnum opus. Text in Hebrew. Bindings with mostly light wear along edges with small chips some scuffing of covers and lightly rubbed. Volume three with two inch crack at lower front joint and chip at head of spine. Moses ben Maimoun 1138-1204 more commonly known as Maimonides in the English language and as Rambam in Hebrew is viewed as the greatest Jewish philosopher of the Middle Ages. This work The Guide of the Perplexed is his magnum opus. It is an in-depth treatment of Jewish thought and practice that aims to resolve the conflict between religious knowledge and secular. Although strongly influenced by the Neo-Platonized Aristotelianism that had sprouted in Islamic circles it departs from the dominant modes of Aristotelian thought by emphasizing the limits of human knowledge and the questionable foundations of significant parts of astronomy and metaphysics. Maimonides was also a well-known physician who wrote medical treatises on numerous diseases and their cures. Later generations of philosophers wrote detailed commentaries on the works of Maimonides which heavily influenced thinkers such as Aquinas Spinoza Leibnitz and Newton. 1826réf. 42478London: Henry Moses 1826. Unpaginated. 30 b/w etchings. Etched title and 29 plates. The images are reminiscent of but more charming than those in Cooke's "Shipping and Craft." Brewington lists Moses as an English etcher who was born in 1782 in London. He worked for the British Museum and died in 1870. Moses published books of drawings of art objects and of historical scenes throughout the first half of the 19th century. However this title is among his scarcest. The present copy contains parts 1-4 in his series of waterfront views. Each image is dated so we can trace the progression from the Thames to Sheerness to the Dockyards. As time went on he issued more prints until he was able to publish an issue with 57 etchings. The edition offered here is rare with only two copies listed on OCLC. Brewington Dictionary p. 268. Scattered foxing some pages rather grubby but still a good copy of a lovely collection of images. Bound in 19th century 1/4 calf over marbled boards with gilt spine decoration. . First edition 8vo pp.123 1; quarter calf over marbled boards manuscript paper label on spine; boards rubbed upper joint starting textblock clean and sound. One of the first books published at Andover Theological Seminary and for more than thirty years the standard among theological institutions. Paradise A history of printing in Andover. Prior to his joining Andover as professor of sacred literature Stuart had no acquaintance with Hebrew. He immediately began intensive study of the language and became one of the few native-born Americans to know enough to teach it. Lack of funding compelled Stuart to produce his own grammar for the benefit of his students which was first circulated in manuscript then printed in 1813 and expanded in 1821. He had to import Hebrew type and as local printers couldn't properly set it did much of the setting himself DAB. While other grammars of Hebrew had been printed in America as accompaniments to lexicographical works this is one of the earliest if not the first separately produced grammar of Hebrew in the States.
