ref. 1941Berkeley: U California P. 1965. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. An excellent association copy inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Hervey Voge with the regards of Francis P. Farquhar 8 November 1965." Voge was an early and important climber in the Sierra and he made 35 first ascents in the range naming two peaks. In 1934 Voge and Sierra Club-president-to-be David Brower traversed the High Sierra from Kearsarge Pass area to Yosemite climbing 59 peaks in 69 days. In fact it was Voge who apparently first encouraged Brower to join him as a member of the Sierra Club. Voge was the editor of the early influential The Climber’s Guide to the Sierra Nevada published by the Sierra Club and professionally a PhD chemist who worked for Shell. Farquhar was likewise an accomplished mountain climber as well as an environmentalist historian of California bibliographer and fine press bibliophile among other roles. He served for several years as the president of the Sierra Club. There's a mountain named for him in Kings Canyon National Park. This is his classic and best known book. A large octavo in blue cloth with a frontispiece painting by William Kieth in color black and white photos and illustrations throughout. A near fine copy with light offsetting from the jacket flaps on the endpapers. The jacket very good with a little wear to corners and spine ends and very handsome made of fibrous paper perhaps handmade. A marquee mountain association . U California P. hardcover

1957ref. 149346New York: McGraw-Hill 1957. Special edition of this classic work basis for the 1957 Academy Award-winning film starring Joanne Woodward. Octavo original half cloth. Signed and inscribed by both authors on the front free endpaper "For John Persall With all good wishes and our cordial regard Corbett Thigpen Hervey Cleckley." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with the rare original wraparound band. Jacket design by Michael McIver. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box with a pictorial inlay. An exceptional presentation. In 1954 Drs. Thigpen adn Cleckley wrote a technical article "A Case of Multiple Personality" for the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. This appeared before they had completed the work on the case. The Three Faces of Eve is an extension of that collaboration - a complete account of this extraordinary case which is likely to engage the lay reader's interest as vividly as that of physicians and professional workers in psychology and sociology. Eve White was a shy saintly housewife and mother. Eve Black was a coarse seductive beauty with a passion for drinking dancing and the company of strangers. Jane was the third Eve. She was a mature poised woman - but her tormented soul held the key to Eve's deepest mystery. They were all one woman - and they were all unlike the Eve that finally emerged. McGraw-Hill hardcover

An excellent example of the second printing of Wycliffe's d.1384 New Testament extra illustrated with 38 interleaved woodcuts taken from an edition of the Biblia Pauperum printed by the Unwin Brothers in 1877 to coincide with the qaudricentennial celebration of the printer William Caxton. These woodcuts are believed to have been printed from blocks dating to the latter half of the fifteenth century see no. 2008 in Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible 1525-1961. revised and expanded by A.S. Herbert. The text is a reprint of John Lewis' edition of Wycliffe's New Testament that was brought out in a limited run of 160 copies in 1731 and marked the first time that Wycliffe's translation appeared in print. Both follow the text of the 'Later Version' of the Wycliffite Bible which replaced the direct transliteration of the Latin Vulgate of the 'Early Version' for a more sense-by-sense rendering of the text into English. According to Darlow & Moule the 'text was obtained by Llewis from two MSS. both representing the later Wycliffite version:-1 an early fifteenth-century MS. belonging to himself now in the Bodleian Gough Eccl. top. 5; 2 a MS. written about 1420 belonging to Sir Edw. Dering and in 1850 the property of W. Conybeare Dean of Llandaff. See Forshall and Madden's edition of the complete Bible 1850 Preface P. i n. p. l and p. lxiv' Wycliffe was a controversial figure in his own day blurring the the boundaries between theologian and philosopher and unwisely becoming embroiled in Court politics of fourteenth-century England. His great attack on the temporal authority of the Church De civili dominio 'On civil dominion' earned the official condemnation of Pope Gregory XI in 1377 and his Eucharistic teachings were condemned by ecclesiastical council in 1382. This would all lead ultimately to his posthumous declaration as a heretic and the exhumation of his bones in 1428 which were burned the ashes being scattered into the River Swift. His legacy nevertheless survived in the Lollard heresy that gripped England in the fifteenth century and the Hussites of Bohemia and he would go on to be declared the prophetic 'Morning Star' in the hagiographical biographies of the Protestant Reformation that followed. Herveys text gives an exhaustive historical account of old English Christmas customs: some -- like the feasting on roast beef and turkey plum pudding and mince pies -- still flourishing; others -- like waits carol singing at night and mumming -- almost forgotten. Seymours illustrations completed just a few months before his suicide as he was working on Dickenss PICKWICK PAPERS capture the spirit and joy of the season. From the coach load of Norfolk turkeys to the sleepy waits singers in the light of the street lantern to the merry old gentleman enjoying Christmas by his fire he provides a delightful selection of holiday scenes. THE BOOK OF CHRISTMAS first published in 1836 and reprinted the following year was an early attempt to record and preserve the old customs. As the Victorian revival of the holiday gathered pace during the 1840s many more histories of Christmas festivities and practices were published. They were often bound and illustrated as attractive gift books and so helped to establish a new tradition of the Christmas publishing season BRITISH LIBRARY. William Spooner hardcover books

Front page detached from staples front page and a bit of the second page with scattered ink markings moderate chipping toning and bumping along the edges thus about very good the text largely clean throughout. An early 22-page treatment script for the famed film Shanghai Express written by Harry Hervey who is generally only credited with writing the short story from which the film was based. Also different is the character Captain Esme Simpson who appears to be the film's character Captain Donald Harvey played by Clive Brook. The film directed by Josef von Sternberg and released in February of 1932 also featured noted Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong as Hui Fei. An interesting piece of Pre-Code Era Hollywood likely printed in very small numbers for a select group of people. unknown
