1926réf. h46337NY: New York: George H. Doran 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/fair. Publisher's cloth in pictorial dust jacket. Book good or better with some fading wear and discoloration to spine bookplate of the University of Pittsburgh's Hervey Allen collection and their discard stamp additional leather bookplate of W. Van R. Whitall also on pastedown. Jacket poor to fair mainly complete but in pieces now kept together by a jacket protector. Inscribed by Allen very fondly to Whitall: "W. Van R. Whitall Esq. who has listened patiently to many a long-winded tale of the times of battle inflicted at his own fireside - this essence of the stories now to him with all the affection and esteem of the many unreadable years. Hervey Allen New York City March 1926 'One of the first of the firsts.'" Whitall's wife and Allen were childhood friends in South Carolina and Allen gave to her the bound manuscript of "Anthony Adverse" the subject of a New Yorker article in 1934. Major Whitall was a well known book collector and bibliophile. Struck by Allen's poem "The Blindman" published in 1923 Whitall established "The Blindman Prize" a $250 annual prize for the best poem administered by the Poetry Society of South Carolina. It is clear from all this that Allen was very close to the Whitalls. Allen's account of the American front in France in the summer of 1918. George H. Doran hardcover
