2006Octavo in tan cloth with red titles on spine in black and white and red dust jakcet; 258 pp., 24 cm. In English; Translated from the Tibetan; Series: Buddhism and modernity; || Abstract: "Gendun Chopel is considered the most important Tibetan intellectual of the twentieth century. His life spanned the two defining moments in modern Tibetan history: the entry into Lhasa by British troops in 1904 and by Chinese troops in 1951. Recognized as an incarnate lama while he was a child, Gendun Chopel excelled in the traditional monastic curriculum and went on to become expert in fields as diverse as philosophy, history, linguistics, geography, and tantric Buddhism. Near the end of his life, before he was persecuted and imprisoned by the government of the young Dalai Lama, he would dictate the Adornment for Nagarjuna's Thought, a work on Madhyamaka, or "Middle Way," philosophy. It sparked controversy immediately upon its publication and continues to do so today." "The Madman's Middle Way presents the first English translation of this major Tibetan Buddhist work, accompanied by an essay on Gendun Chopel's life liberally interspersed with passages from his writings. Donald S. Lopez Jr. also provides a commentary that sheds light on the doctrinal context of the Adornment and summarizes its key arguments. Ultimately, Lopez examines the long-standing debate over whether Gendun Chopel in fact is the author of the Adornment; the heated critical response to the work by Tibetan monks of the Dalai Lama's sect; and what the Adornment tells us about Tibetan Buddhism's encounter with modernity. The result is an insightful glimpse into a provocative and enigmatic work that will be of great interest to anyone seriously interested in Buddhism or Asian religions."--Jacket. || Contents: The life -- The text -- The commentary -- The author -- The critics -- The question of modernity.

Nichiren 12221282 was a Buddhist monk who lived during the Kamakura period 11851333 in Japan. Nichiren taught devotion to the Lotus Sutra entitled Myoho-Renge-Kyo in Japanese which contained Gautama Buddha's teachings towards the end of his life as the exclusive means to attain enlightenment. Nichiren believed that this sutra contained the essence of all of Gautama Buddha's teachings related to the laws of cause and effect karma and leading all people without distinction to enlightenment. This devotion to the sutra entails the chanting of Namu Myoho Renge Kyo referred to as daimoku as the essential practice of the teaching. Nichiren Buddhism includes various schools such as Nichiren Shoshu Nichiren Shu and Soka Gakkai each claiming to be the only true follower of their founder with their own interpretations of Nichiren's teachings. However despite the differences between schools all Nichiren sects share the fundamental practice of chanting daimoku. While all Nichiren Buddhist schools regard him as a reincarnation of the Lotus Sutra's Bodhisattva Superior Practices Jogyo Bosatsu some schools of Nichiren Buddhism's Nikko lineages regard him as the actual Buddha of this age or the Buddha of the Latter day of the Law and for all eternity. Samuel Weiser ticket at front Luzac & Co ticket at rear original plain wrappers bound in. Some pencil annotations to front blank wrapper page block somewhat toned and with a few edge wrinkles. Very good. First separate printing of one of D.T. Suzuki's 1870-1966 influential essays on the training of a Zen Buddhist monk. Suzuki helped spread interest in Eastern philosophy and specifically Zen and Shin Buddhism to the West in the 20th century. This essay first appeared in his Eastern Buddhist journal which was launched after he and his wife founded the Eastern Buddhist Society in 1921 at Otani University and has subsequently been anthologized in many collections on Zen. Interestingly we find mention of this separate printing in catalogs from Luzac & Co the prominent London-based bookseller and publisher of books on the East as early as 1921. In any event it is a scarce publication with OCLC citing holdings only at Columbia Northwestern and the University of Oregon. From the library of Blanche DeVries and Pierre Bernard.
