His Alttestamentliche Studien (4 vols. , 190812) , a collection of writings on the composition of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and the early history of Israel, are uniform in their complete rejection of the starting points of modern Pentateuchal criticism. According to Eerdman, material found particularly in Genesis belongs to various stages of religious development of which the earliest is polytheistic and the latest monotheistic. He argued for the cultural historicity of the patriarchs and for the advanced state of ritual in the Mosaic period. He maintained that most of the legal codes of Leviticus were Mosaic, thus rejecting the commonly accepted J. Wellhausen-K. H. Graf hypothesis. He has written over 100 scholarly articles. One of the major thrusts of his work has been to make the Bible and biblical scholarship available to the broad Jewish community. For example, his book Understanding Genesis (1966) has served as a general introduction to the Bible and was followed by Exploring Exodus (1986) and his Commentary on Genesis (1989) .
