ref. 14111Set of two vintage Albumen photographs 8 1/4" X 10-1/2" 8.25" x 10.5" made in the 1800s. Unmounted. First photo shows a view of the Pyramids with a foreground of Palm Trees and Native men on Camels. The Sphinx can be seen in the distance. Etched into the lower left of the photograph are the words "Palmiers & Pyramides vue Generale 494" and in the lower right the photographer's mark "JP Sebah." Very clean condition with a few small flaws in the emulsion. Pascal Sébah opened his photography studio in Istanbul in 1857 and by 1873 was successful enough to open another studio in Cairo. After he died in 1886 the studio was managed by his brother Cosmi until Pascal's son Jean joined him in 1888. Due to the mark this is most likely a photograph by Jean Pascal Sebah. An excellent example. Second photo captures a scene on the Nile in Egypt with pyramids in the background by Cosmi Sebah. The photographer's signature in the negative lower right recto. Several minor scattered imperfections including a waviness throughout. Overall condition is good. unknown books

ref. 139692 photographs of Ramesis Statueand Large Monument.Printed Circa 1880s on 2 large albumen prints. 8-1/2"x10" mounted on recto and verso of one 10"x10" board. First image is signed on photograph in ink "A. Beato." Second image appears to have been signed in negative "A. Beato" Cockling to mount some surface scratching on both photographs. Upper corner of mount bent not affecting any image. Because of the existence of a number of photographs signed "Felice Antonio Beato" and "Felice A. Beato" it was long assumed that there was one photographer who somehow managed to photograph at the same time in places as distant as Egypt and Japan. But in 1983 it was shown by Italo Zannier Bennett 1996 38 that "Felice Antonio Beato" represented two brothers Felice Beato and Antonio Beato who sometimes worked together sharing a signature. The confusion arising from the signatures continues to cause problems in identifying which of the two photographers was the creator of a given image. Antonio Beato went to Cairo in 1860 where he spent two years before moving to Luxor where he opened a photographic studio in 1862 and began producing tourist images of the people and architectural sites of the area. In the late 1860s Beato was in partnership with Hippolyte Arnoux. unknown books

From the collection of King Farouk of Egypt sold originally at the 1988 Oakland Galleries auction of the J.W. Menhall Estate including items from the King Farouk Collection and sold here with a copy of the sale catalogue in which the folder is illustrated. Farouk I of Egypt was the tenth ruler from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty and the penultimate King of Egypt and the Sudan succeeding his father Fuad I of Egypt in 1936. He ruled during a turbulent time in Egyptian and Middle East history that was marked by the creation of the Arab League the first Arab-Israeli conflict and heated nationalist opposition to the British. Instead of being the shrewd political leader that Egypt needed Farouk was a materialistic womanizer and corpulent spendthrift whose outrageous lifestyle eventually led to his downfall. Enamoured of the glamorous royal lifestyle although he already had thousands of acres of land dozens of palaces and hundreds of cars the youthful king often travelled to Europe for grand shopping sprees earning the ire of many of his subjects. It is said that he ate 600 oysters a week and in 1951 he bought the pear-shaped 94-carat Star of the East Diamond and a fancy-coloured oval-cut diamond from jeweler Harry Winston. Overthrown in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 he was forced to abdicate in favor of his infant son Ahmed Fuad who succeeded him as Fuad II of Egypt. He died in exile in Italy. hardcover books
