Baybars al-Mansuri (Rukn ad-Din Baybars ad-Dawadar al-Man?uri al-Kha?a?i), (?-1325). He was purchased from the prince of Mosul in c. 1260 and participated in several of Qalawun's campaigns during the reign of sultan Baibars. In 1284, he was given command of fifty horsemen. In 1287, he was appointed governor of Al Karak, a post which he held until Qalawun's death in 1290. After his first work (a historiographical work, known as Zubdat al-fikra fi ta'rikh al-hijra; "quintessence of thought in Muslim history"), his second work, Al-Tuhfa al-mulukiyya fi l-dawla al turkiyya, is based on the Zubda and covers only the Bahri period, 1250-1325. His Zubda is a universal chronicle which ends just prior to his death, and it is by far the more informative work, but the Tuhfa contains some original content as well. Both works rely heavily on Ibn Abd al-Zahir. Both works were written with the help of the Coptic scribe Ibn Kabar.

1980DJ shows some wear at extremities, front board has cup ring - text is clean and unmarked. Overall in VERY GOOD+ condition; To look upon a mummy is to come face to face with our past. This book presents the story of mummification as a practice worldwide. Mummies have been found on every continent, some deliberately preserved by use of a variety of complex techniques (as with the ancient Egyptians) , others accidentally by dry baking heat, intense cold and ice, or by tanning in peat bogs. By examining these preserved humans, we can get profound insights into the lives, health, culture and deaths of individuals and populations long gone. The first edition of this book was acclaimed as a classic. This readable new edition builds on these foundations, investigating the fantastic new findings in South America, Europe and the Far East. It will be a must-have volume for anyone working in paleopathology and a fascinating read for all those interested in anthropology, archaeology, and the history of medicine. ; 360 pages

1994Lucie Duff Gordon was a world apart from her Victorian counterparts. An intellectual, traveller, writer and progressive social commentator, she and her husband led a bohemian, eccentric and highly unconventional life in London, socialising with such luminaries as Tennyson, Dickens and Thackeray. In 1862, however, Lucie was diagnosed with tuberculosis and on the advice of her doctor, left her husband and three children to live in Egypt, where she would spend the rest of her life. Drawing on Duff Gordon's correspondence with her family, Katherine Frank elegantly relates the dramatic transformation that she underwent as she discarded the restrictions of Victorian England, shunned the English community in Cairo and immersed herself in the Egyptian way of life - 'the real, true Arabian nights'. Lucie Duff Gordon, Noor ala Noor 'light from the source of all light' as she later became, led an exceptional, luminous life, never afraid to step outside the boundaries of convention and explore the unknown.399p. plates bibliography index.
