réf. 25889Undated but on Britannia paper watermarked 1805; and the San Ysidro was a prison ship at Plymouth between May 1805 and September 1814. Napoleon’s Egyptian Campaign 1798-1801 inspired a period of ‘Egyptomania’ culminating in Champollion’s decipherment of the Rossetta Stone. The contribution of the author of this letter to this outpouring of scholarly activity is an offer to the President of the Society of Antiquaries of London to blow up one of the pyramids in order to extract their contents. See the recipient’s entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 8vo. Bifolium of laid Britannia paper watermarked 1805. Fifty-five lines well laid out and written in a neat and stylish hand. In fair condition somewhat grubby and warn folded into a packet. Addressed to ‘The Right Honorable the Earl of Leicester. / F.R.S. / President of the Society of Antiquaries / London.’ Signed: ‘Wm. Lydiard - / Master’s Mate of HM Prison Ship San Ysidro / Plymo’ Dock’. The text begins: ‘. excess of servility and drudgery to which they were driven even to the making of Brick and other debasing services; some writers have from thence inferred that the Pyramids being of stone is a proof that they were not founded by them no work of that kind being recorded: but is it not recorded that they built Treasure Cities’ He proceeds to discuss whether as ‘Some authors affirm’ the pyramids are ‘the Tombs of Kings’. He states that he was ‘a few days since’ ‘furnished with the official account of the capture of Alexandria’ The French garrison at Alexandria had surrendered to the British on 2 September 1801. and that ‘it immediately struck me with a desire of troubling you on this subject with the view of observing to you that if it is the intention of government to follow up their success in that quarter; whether this may not afford a good opportunity for opening one or two of these mysterious piles’ Warming to his theme he continues: ‘it surely can be done - gunpowder has a speedy effect in operations of this nature - the trouble might not be small but I certainly would not hesitate to undertake the performance of it neither can I imagine I would take any very considerable time or expense to execute it.’ After this surprising offer he goes some way to redeeming himself by stating: ‘There may be some valuable remains of antiquity deposited in those closed which may materially tend to the illustration of the ancient history manners or customs of the Egyptians’. He ends with reference to ‘sacred Scripture’ and the ‘plundering of the Temple by Shishak’. Maison Bonfils was a French family-run company producing and selling photography and photographic products from Beirut then in Ottoman Syria now in Lebanon from 1867 until 1918 from 1878 on renamed "F. Bonfils et Cie". The Bonfils ran the first and in their time most successful photographic studio in the city. Maison Bonfils produced studio portraits staged biblical scenes landscapes and panoramic photographs. Félix Bonfils a French photographer married Marie-Lydie Cabanis in 1857. The couple together with their son Adrien moved to Beirut in 1867 where they opened a photographic studio called "Maison Bonfils" on what later became rue Georges-Picot. Maison Bonfils produced thousands of photographs of the Middle East. Bonfils worked with both his wife and his son. They photographed landscapes portraits scenes with subjects dressed in Middle Eastern regalia and also stories from the Bible. Félix Bonfils took photographs in Ottoman Syria in today's Lebanon Syria Israel & Palestine the Khedivate of Egypt Greece and Constantinople producing the vast majority of his work while his wife and son were also involved in photography produced by the studio. As few are signed it is difficult to identify who is responsible for individual photographs. Lydie is thought to have taken some of the studio portraits especially those of Middle Eastern women who were more inclined to pose for a female photographer. In 1876 Félix returned to AlÄs to have compiled collections of their photographs published. In 1878 when the name of the studio was changed to "F. Bonfils et Cie" Adrien was back in Beirut after completing his studies in France and took more responsibility for photography including landscape. Félix again travelled to AlÄs to establish a collotype printing factory in 1880 and died there in 1885. Probably Maison Bonfils hardcover

réf. 22255'Darlington 21/7mo July 1853'. See Sams's entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. On a bifolium the second leaf of which has had a rectangle almost amounting to half cut away from the bottom. The text of the letter is complete but the priced list of the prints and drawings on the last page lacks the lower half. A long letter closely written. Signed 'J. Sams.' Aged worn and lightly stained but nevertheless in passable condition. The recipient saluted as 'Esteemed Friend' is not named. In the first paragraph Sams is at pains to explain his bookselling practice as founded on plain dealing: 'I have been from home to York & other places & this is the first day I have had here since thine came. I regret the circumstance fearing it may cause to suppose I have been inattentive ot the request sent. As a rule the wish is to put all as cheap as may be & not take back. One great difficulty as to return is especially of a fine work likely to be noticed as this people have remarked last word underlined the book not seeing it as usual suppose it sold & gone even if they are not so informed. Consequently to see it come back again they suppose somethg. sic is the matter & the sale of the work afterwards; is probably much injured. Sometimes also some injury arises in carriage two ways.' But to a much respected customer I will look carefully among my plates & try to accommodate – tho' the risk at which I have made free to hint is very considerable.' He continues at equal length in the same idiosyncratic tone regarding his plan to 'forward a collection of fine & curious coloured prints all of which have their original marks but I should have said a number are coloured drawings'. After sending respects to 'thyself & daughter' he signs 'in haste J. Sams.' The reverse of the second leaf carries a list of fourteen of the prints and drawings with prices most marked with pencil crosses to indicate that they are desired. A fifteenth entry ends abruptly indicating that the bottom part of the list has been cut away. 'Darlington 21/7mo (July) 1853'. unknown
