1980Royal octavo. Pp. xii, 287. Frontispiece "The Earliest Known Representation of the God Osiris". Addenda, bibliography, indices. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's brown full cloth, gilt lettering to cover and spine. In mint condition. Excellent copy, practically new. ~ Revised and enlarged edition. Studies in the History of Religions (Supplements to Numen), XL. Edited by M. Heerma van Voss, E. Sharpe, R. Werblowsky. First appeared in 1966 in Münchner Ägyptologische Studien, 9. In 1979, Griffiths wrote to Heerma van Voss: "I have had a stroke of luck with the earliest known representation of Osiris. It has never published before and so I thought it would be nice as the frontispiece of my book." He further asked Heerma van Voss to send the photograph to Brill for inclusion in the book which was still in preparation. Heerma van Voss did just that and the earliest known representation of Osiris has been published in this book a year later. ~ [NOTE:] It should be noted that Brill publishers currently offer this book as a digitalized - laser-printed - reproduction, a so-called print-on-request, while not identifying this as such, but presenting it as a "new" copy from the original edition, which now is over 50 years old. We have examined and compared both editions, and the difference in quality is obvious to the bare eye. Might be of importance for the purists to be aware of this.

1892417 pages. Index. Appendices. Footnotes. List of sixty black and white illustrations. A rare surviving copy of this important reference, made all the more engaging by today's environment of competing fiat currency devaluations. "Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Attractive gilt decoration upon green front board. Legible gilt lettering upon backstrip. Average external soiling and wear. Several chips from and lengthy openings along backstrip which has become brittle with age. Narrow opening along most of front hinge. Back hinge open. Bookplate discretely removed inside front board.
