Slightly rubbed with minor external dustsoil sewing perished but complete and neat with occasional interior toning else a well-preserved copy: Very Good. Ephemeral color plate book on East Africa inscribed for presentation by a major explorer of the Nile. An account of the 1877 Church Missionary Society expedition to what is now Uganda taken from the journal and drawings of a member of the expedition. In late 1876 explorer Henry Morton Stanley sent word to the UK that King Muteesa I of Buganda would be willing to receive Christian missionaries. The Church Missionary Society immediately organized a mission expedition. Eight men including Thomas O'Neill a young architect set out from Zanzibar in 1877 under the leadership of Alexander Murdoch Mackay. Within two years four of the eight men had died. O'Neill and another man were killed when they involved themselves in a dispute between King Lkonge of Ukerewe Island and an Arab traveller. Mackay alone reached Muteesa I. Though the mission expedition had not prospered the Church Missionary Society persisted. It published this account of its progress based on O'Neill's journals and sketches to draw attention and raise further funds for its efforts. This copy was presented to a Scottish laird Hugh Fife Ashley Brodie 23rd of Brodie by his neighbor famed explorer James Augustus Grant 1827-1892. Grant with John Hanning Speke had led the 1860-63 expedition that traced the Nile River to its source at Lake Victoria and he had met King Muteesa I personally. When he later retired to Nairn he "became one of a small group of people influential in matters to do with Africa" and advised the Church Missionary Society on its activities ODNB. An uncommon title. We trace five copies in the trade since the 1940s only two of which were in the original paper wrappers. Not in Howgego though he does discuss the Mackay expedition. HILMY II p.80. 1935ref. 235981935. Colonial Uganda novel by Akiki K. Nyabongo published in 1935 documenting an African aristocrat's literary response to missionary education colonial rule and the cultural transformations reshaping East Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on Nyabongo's own background as a prince of the Tooro Kingdom the novel follows the education and political formation of an African chief negotiating competing systems of authority as Christian missions European imperial expansion and indigenous institutions collide. Published while Nyabongo was studying anthropology at Oxford under William Lyon Phelps's sponsorship the work stands among the earliest English language novels by a Ugandan author and marks an early effort by an African writer to present colonial experience from an African intellectual perspective. Nyabongo Akiki K. The Story of an African Chief. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1935. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper dated May 15 1939: "Dennis S. Rawland / Obugonza mukwo kwetegerezangawo / Hatali kufunga busaho kumanyangana / Nyabongo / May 15 1939." First edition. Illustrated by Eleanor Maroney with an introduction by William Lyon Phelps. 8vo. Original publisher's cloth in the original illustrated dust jacket. The jacket reproduces an illustration of an enthroned African ruler on the front panel and the publisher's promotional description on the rear while the text includes black and white illustrations throughout. Published at a moment when African authors writing in English remained exceptionally few The Story of an African Chief predates the emergence of the better known generation of postwar African novelists and presents colonial East Africa through the voice of an educated African author rather than that of a European administrator or missionary. Nyabongo later became an anthropologist and writer whose work extended beyond fiction into political and cultural commentary while this novel was republished in Britain as Africa Answers Back reflecting its broader engagement with debates over empire education race and African self representation. The contemporary presentation inscription places the volume within the author's lifetime and preserves a direct association with Nyabongo's readership only four years after publication. Some present edge wear and toning to the dust jacket with small losses at the spine ends and corners; clean interior; inscription strong and legible. Overall very good condition. A first edition preserving Prince Akiki K. Nyabongo's signed 1939 inscription from one of the earliest English language novels written by a Ugandan author. unknown
1904ref. 154021904. Gayaza School classroom lantern slide 1904 documents girls receiving classroom instruction at the pioneering Church Missionary Society school established at Gayaza in Buganda present-day Uganda. Founded in 1904 as a school for girls Gayaza developed into what is now Gayaza High School identified by the school as Uganda's oldest all-girls boarding secondary school. The image dates from the institution's founding period and records African girls engaged in reading under two female teachers providing unusually detailed visual evidence of girls' education within an early twentieth-century missionary school in Uganda. Original glass lantern slide 3¼ x 4 inches published by the Young People's Missionary Movement of the United States and Canada. Scratched into the negative beneath the image is the identification: "Gayaza A Class in School." Girls of varying school ages occupy the classroom; approximately half sit on the floor holding open books while others sit on a bench at a table with books before them. Two female teachers stand among the pupils. Classroom equipment includes a blackboard on an easel two wall maps a clock and a globe resting on a cabinet. The girls wear garments wrapped or draped around the lower body. These details record both instructional practice and the material furnishings available in the school's early classroom. The slide also documents how images of African mission schools circulated beyond Uganda. The Young People's Missionary Movement described lantern slides as its most extensively used form of pictorial material and supplied such images to mission boards for missionary education. This example therefore preserves two related historical records: the classroom at Gayaza and the presentation of girls' education in Uganda to North American Christian audiences. Gayaza subsequently developed into a secondary boarding school for girls retaining its Church foundation. unknown
