1990Their most recent sojourn took them to Africa for the first time, where Murphy, eighteen-year-old Rachel and a Fulani stallion called Egbert spent three unpredictable months following ludicrously inaccurate maps leading them from village to village in Cameroon. Although they spoke none of Cameroon's 300 or so languages, the Murphys enjoyed the hospitality of the local people and numerous village chiefs--some with as many as 250 wives--as they made their way through the highlands, where Europeans were first seen fewer than ninety years ago. They camped in the uncannily depopulated Gangdaba Mountains, which soon broke their nerve; during their stay in the breathtaking Mbabo Mountains, they had the chance to observe the indigenous wildlife--warthogs, antelope, baboons, and colobus monkeys. 1987Travels in West Africa (Everyman Classics Series)No European woman had ventured where Kingsley would venture, and no man either. In defiance of Victorian notions about women's roles, she journeyed through West Africa, climbed mountains, experienced harrowing adventures, dwelling among cannibals, and lived to write one of the most admired books of high adventure of all time. Introduced and abridged by Elspeth Huxley from the book first published in 1897, 270p. maps Book
1969A Zoo in My Luggage is Gerald Durrell's account of his attempt to set up his own zoo, after years spent gathering animals for other zoos. Journeying to Cameroon, he and his wife collected numerous mammals, birds and reptiles, including Cholmondely the chimpanzee and Bug-eye the bush-baby. But their problems really began when they attempted to return with their exotic menagerie. Not only had they to get them safely home to Britain but they also had to find somewhere able and - most of all - willing to house them. Book
2020br.
