So I wrote to Chad Oness who sent this: "He was an old graphic artist I met through the woman from whom I got my press years ago. Part of a group of typophiles living in DC. I don't think he was a figure who was marked for any public fame which is in part the reason for that little elegiac book . He was a kind and helpful man and I would have liked to have known him better . I love that little book." Six months later Hitler's troops marched unopposed into Prague and established the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia--the first non-German territory to be occupied by Nazi Germany. Although Czechs outnumbered Germans thirty to one Nazi leaders were determined to make the region entirely German. Chad Bryant explores the origins and implementation of these plans as part of a wider history of Nazi rule and its consequences for the region. To make the Protectorate German half the Czech population and all Jews would be expelled or killed with the other half assimilated into a German national community with the correct racial and cultural composition. With the arrival of Reinhard Heydrich Germanization measures accelerated. People faced mounting pressure from all sides. The Nazis required their subjects to act and speak German while Czech patriots and exiled leaders pressed their countrymen to act as "good Czechs." By destroying democratic institutions harnessing the economy redefining citizenship murdering the Jews and creating a climate of terror the Nazi occupation set the stage for the postwar expulsion of Czechoslovakia's three million Germans and for the Communists' rise to power in 1948. The region Bryant shows became entirely Czech but not before Nazi rulers and their postwar successors had changed forever what it meant to be Czech or German. Publisher. 2026Best.-Nr. 143154Berkeley: CODEX Foundation The 2026. perfect bound. 8.5 x 6.75 x .5 inches. perfect bound. 114 pages. For this volume we encouraged our contributors to think about the role of craft within the fields of artists' books and fine press publications as well as how these works fit into the greater world of contemporary art. Conversations about craft in contemporary art practices have met with some resistance in the past. However we currently find ourselves in an era of greater acceptance of craft legacies and practices within the fine arts. The editors of this issue were interested in investigating the 'why' and 'how' of this current trend. As we will see in this issue craft connects us to our humanity. It cultivates a rich dialogue with others and gives meaning to how we engage with the world around us. In this issue we push to explore where an expanded notion of craft and the handmade within contemporary art practices can take us. The authors in this issue dive deep into their practices their passions and their scholarship in the field. We hope you will enjoy the range of essays interviews and reviews in this edition which take on a range of approaches including discussions surrounding the use of digital tools with a craft ethos and ideas on what it means to be hand-crafted in a digital age. Article titles include topics such as Conceptual Art of Handmade Paper in Artists' Books since the 1970's The Art of the Book in India and Crafting the Shape of Meaning while other articles review work by Ioulia Akhmadeeva Carolina Caycedo Lesia Maruschak Chad Pastotnik Felicia Rice and Haein Song.
