Until the mid-twentieth century the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was a Copt appointed by the Coptic Patriarchate in Egypt. In 1929 four native Ethiopian bishops were ordained to assist the Coptic Metropolitan. Subsequently with the support of Emperor Haile Selassie reigned 1930-1974 an agreement was reached with the Copts in 1948 providing for the election of an ethnic Ethiopian Metropolitan to succeed the Metropolitan Kyrillos. Thus when he died in 1951 an assembly of clergy and laity elected an Ethiopian Basilios as Metropolitan and the autonomy of the Ethiopian Church was established; eight years later he was confirmed by the Coptic Patriarchate as the first Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. unknown

1896Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. 16mo. (14,5 x 10,5 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 20 p. First and only edition of this extremely rare pamphlet includes the chapters of 'From Marseilles to Gabon' and 'From Libreville to Banguela' of Trivier's expeditions in Africa. First chapter includes Trivier's Mozambique travel by ship over the Strait of Gibraltar. In this chapter, Trivier described the purpose of his voyage as "After returning to France from my last trip in January 1890, I declared that many more places should be seen. I have written many articles about the necessity of looking for new ways to eliminate the fears and worries caused by McKinley tariffs that are harmed everywhere. As a nice result of this, the Paris City Council and the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce decided not to be dispatched to the hometown of Africans with an amount of money close to 11,000 francs.". In the second chapter, he describes Congo and other parts of Central Africa. French explorer Elisee Trivier followed in the footsteps of Scottish missionary David Livingstone in his attempt to explore the interior of Africa. Trivier's expedition traveled in 1889 up the Congo and across Africa to the island of Zanzibar on the eastern coast. Trivier is considered the first French explorer to have crossed Africa. 1938Very Good Turkish Original grey cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [xxviii], [4], [4], 1112 p., 2 full-page color maps. First map is the most famous one showing the Nile and the second one shows the Mediterranean shores and cities of Egypt. Rare first edition of the 10th, and the last volume of the Evliya's travel corpus including his descriptions of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in the late 17th century. This legendary travel account was published between 1896-1938 respectively in ten volumes. "Book X lands him in Egypt and takes him up the Nile to the Sudan and Ethiopia. When Evliya reaches Ibrim on the Nile, the southernmost limit of the Ottoman Empire, he remarks on the intense heat of the place; contrasting it with the intense cold he experienced at the northernmost limit, Azov; and with the mild climates at the eastern and western frontiers, Baghdad on the one hand, and Istolnibelgrad on the other. Apparently, Egypt suited him best, and he found Cairo a worthy counterpart to Istanbul; for he settled there to work up his memoirs of forty-one years of travel. He died around 1683, and there is controversy over whether a certain cryptic passage refers to the Ottoman defeat at Vienna.". (Evliya Çelebi's book of travels. 2. Evliya Çelebi in Bitlis). Evliya Çelebi visited Suakin during one of his journeys across Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Tanzania. He describes this territory under the title "The characteristics of old throne center Suakin" as "we stayed in this city for 12 days, trading with all kinds of people with camel trains. I sold 40 dromedaries in return for 500 piasters and also disburdened, sold 50 tusks for 500 piasters. Then we started to wander around the city. The Suez Sea is to the north of the island, and it takes 12 hours to reach Mecca from the island. Therefore, the direction of Mecca from this city is to the north. Suakin is a little island stretching three miles from east to west. (Afyoncu, Daily Sabah). Further travels in the 1670s took him to western and southwestern Anatolia and Syria. He completed the Hajj again and appears to have settled in Egypt for several years. He traveled in Upper Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia searching for the sources of the River Nile, before settling down to compile his great travel book. OCLC 630428224 (with four copies).

Extensively-annotated photograph album covering Kenneth Fields' life and adventures in and around Harar Ethiopia during his military service there in the late 1960s. Almost all of the photos in the album are accompanied by substantial captions from Fields on mounted index cards. Fields put this together as a travelogue starting with three postcards home to his wife Irma from each of his layovers on the way to Addis Ababa Rome Athens and Cairo. He arrived in Harar on July 23 1967 and the first photo is an image of the house he and MSgt. Seery share "rented for us by the American Embassy." Then follow photos of their pet baboons Cheesy and Ishy who is "a mess.loves beer & cigarettes better than anything." They also have a donkey Thelma and a watch dog Spot. He then provides a photo tour of the house and a summary of his expenses: for a guard "sabanya" a cook Tinish and maid Tinish's daughter Alllimus his share is $17 a month. Fields spent a significant time hunting - there are several images of him with other soldiers on expeditions posing with gazelles and kudus. One photo includes "our helper Tashoma.a little 15 or 16 year old kid the group has kinda adopted. He helps out around the house & goes to the field with us.the boys are trying to get him into Haille Sallaisie sic University." There are also images of a small zoo nearby a "typical Ethiopian house" the local cemetery and the central market in Harar. The last few photos depict a more formal dinner party with Ethiopian officials but Fields does not provide any captions. Fields never describes his duties or mission in any detail but in 1953 a U.S.-Ethiopian Mutual Defense Assistance Agreement was signed and U.S. military advisors established several semi-permanent installations in Ethiopia to help reorganize the Imperial Ministry of National Defense. American "advisors" were also active in helping Ethiopia fight against the Somali Republic and Eritrean Liberation Front rebels. The Ministry's Third Division was headquartered at Harar which is also where the Imperial Military Academy was located. Kenneth Q. Fields 1937-2012 of Sanford Florida spent his career in the Army serving in Korea and Vietnam and retiring with the rank of master sergeant. hardcover books

These two works consist of a second major edition. A small corner of the page is missing on “Lexicon”’s 10 and 11 columns (the text is still readable). German Ludolf was the first to dedicate his interests to Ethiopia, and quite in a pionerisitic way completed a dictionary and a grammar in that language; a fact that would not be common until the end of the XIX century.

1915réf. 508297N.P. 1915. Hardcover. NEAR FINE. An extraordinary portfolio of early 20th-century photographs of Ethiopia featuring eight large-format scenes from a Coptic Orthodox wedding in addition to eight 3x5 photos of Ethiopian children. The wedding photos depict a very formal liturgical ceremony with the bride and groom in ornate robes and crowns attended by priests acolytes deacons cantors and other ecclesiastics in fine vestments carrying the sacred liturgical items including many golden crosses and a richly ornamented Holy Gospel. One photo of the long procession shows a great crowd of attendees dressed in white robes. A previous dealer's description of this porfolio speculates that the great pomp of this ceremony might indicate that it was a royal wedding perhaps even the marriage of Esther Akhnoukh and Fahmy Bey Wissa described by the English Ethnographer S. H. Leeder. But in Leeder's own account he notes that the crowns and regalia are the property of the church a communal holding and the wearing of which is the right and privilege of all baptised faithful for one day in their lives. Photos mounted on original 11x14' mattes with just a bit of rubbing and toning to the extremities one photo with a tiny dampstain to the margin otherwise all photos are FINE entirely clean and sharp. The 3x5' photos of children are mounted four to a matte. These photos show children in joyful poses particularly showcasing their hairstyles one of which includes a oder girl with a large water gourd; two of the photos show children being swarmed by flies. The phtographer is unnamed but there are a fairly limited number of possibilities. It was almost certainly purchased by Rosenberg on his Travelling fellowship around 1921 putting the date of the actual photos sometime in the previous decade. Prior to the Italian invasion in the 30's Ethiopia was not an easy place to access and was simply not a destination for European travellers making professional photo-documentations of it far less common than its neighbor Egypt in the same time period. One tempting and plausible source would be one of the photographers of the Enno Littman-led 'Deutsche Aksum Expedition' which included extensive ethnographic investigations in the course of their larger mission of investigating the archaeological sites of the Kingdom of Aksum in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. A noted Semiticist Littman lived among the Tigre people of Eritrea for a year before directing the Aksum expedition doing research for later linguistic and ethnographic publications including 'Tales Customs Names and Dirges of the Tigre Tribes' which includes ample descriptions of religious ceremony. Housed in a contemporary 11x16' portfolio sold by C. Roberson of London half black cloth over printed paste paper and ties to all three sides with moderate wear to the extremities and French liquor labels to the endpapers. With owner's label to the rear cover ex-libris Louis Conrad Rosenberg a noted architect whose 171 etchings and architectural illustrations and renderings have been archived in the University of Oregon Special Collections Division. After serving in the US Army and American Expeditionary Force during WWI Rosenberg joined the factulty of the University of Oregon. He and his wife Marie Louise Allen of Portland took advantage of a Traveling Fellowship granted by the UO and travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean and the Levant for 2 years beginning in 1920.
