1906Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph 'Mürûr tezkîresi' given to Kayikçi kethüdasi Hidayetzâde Osman' for his travel to Rize by the Ottoman Census Directorate of Trebizond. 4327 cm. In Ottoman script. With special Ottoman period-stamp '2 Kurus'. Two seals on paper dated 'fî sene 5 Haziran [1]322' and '[1]324'. [i.e. AH 1906 and 1908]. Folded. Some stains on paper and minimal holes. Otherwise a good copy. There were several restrictions upon the travelling inside the state during the Ottoman Period. Both local residents and foreigners had to get some official documents called as "yol hükmü (hereafter, the route pass)" in 16th century and "Mürur Tezkiresi (hereafter, the trip permission)" in the 19th century to travel inside the state. The administrators of the settlements in which the visitors would pass were assigned with authorities in the route passes. In this regard, administrators were ordered to help the ambassadors of the foreign states, traders, religious people, to protect them, and not to disturb them with such reasons as collecting taxes, as well as to assist them in getting food and drinks. In the trip permissions, the information on the name of the father, nationality, address and travelling route of the travellers were included. During the period in which the photos didn't exist or weren't prevalent, some information on the age, height, and physical descriptions (beard, moustache, eye color, etc.) were included in the document. The owners of the trip permissions would show the documents to the local administrators or officers upon their arrival, and the authorities would stamp, signed and dated the back of the documents while they were leaving the settlement. In those regions where epidemics were occuring, the back of the travellers' documents were written that they didn't have any diseases while leaving the state. The "mürur" trip permission was redesigned along with the modern state organization structured by II. Mahmud period. Passport regulations inside the country were institutionalized thanks to "Mürur Nizamnameleri" in this period in which there weren't official passport regulations in practice. The Rum Riots in 1820s and the abolition of Janissary corps of the Ottoman Empire in 1826 affected the mürur practices and its supervision. Following the Rum Riots, there were some claims that several spies existed among the Rums in Istanbul, so the Rums who lived in the settlements of Istanbul were made to pay bail after their numbers were determined. It was especially declared that those without the trip permission couldn't enter Istanbul, and even couldn't go to Anatolia. In addition to the Rum Riots,an emergency state was declared due to the start of Janissary corps' riot, and a great number of Janissary were killed or exiled. On the other hand, it was thought that those exiled out of the state might try to come back as they were accustomed to earning their life in Istanbul, and so "Mürur Nizami" practices were put into effect. Those using ferries or sailing ships, on the other hand, needed to submit their passports to the captains in order to get a permission form (pusula) in return for it. After the captains delivered the passports to the officers, those who came to Istanbul would get their passports back in 24 hours, while those outside Istanbul would submit the permission form and take their passports. If they intended to stay, they had to predicate where and how long they will stay. When the visitors couldn't submit their passports or give a reasonable excuse, they would be deported from the Ottoman territories. In the event of determining a fake passport or travel document, those would be deported, following the contacting with the diplomatic representatives of the other countries. Those who showed their passports wished to stay in the Ottoman Territories needed to get a residence permit from the diplomatic representatives [.] (Source: UNEARTHING THE PAST: PASSPORT REGULATIONS IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE, Burak Eryilmaz)

Antoine Poidebard, (1878-1955) was a French archaeologist and Jesuit missionary. He pioneered aerial archaeology in the Middle East. In 1925, during his flights in the Syrian desert, Poidebard discovered tiny reliefs thanks to the shadows brought to the ground by the evening shining light, which revealed geometric structures. It was on this basis that he became the first known airborne prospector, as he was able to map all the layout of the Roman limes using the technical means of the air force. Aerial archeology was born. The air explorer Raymond Chevallier identifies two periods of study in the works of Antoine Poidebard: A first, from 1925 to 1932, during which the researches of Antoine Poidebard fixed the course of the Imperial Limes of Basrah at Palmyra and the Tigris; A second, from 1932 to 1942, which made it possible to specify the Roman organization of the rear of the Euphrates and the Orontes. The result of his work is 550 hours of flight divided into 250 missions during which were taken thousands of photographs on a zone of 1,000 kilometers over 300 kilometers. A very good copy. The Battle of Geok Tepe in 1881 was the main event in the 1880/81 Russian campaign to conquer the Teke Turkomans. Its effect was to give the Russian Empire control over most of what is now Turkmenistan, thereby nearly completing the Russian conquest of Central Asia. The battle is also called Denghil-Tepe or Dangil Teppe. Sources are inconsistent, but Denghil-Tepe seems to have been the name of the fort and also the name of a small hill or tumulus in the northwest corner of the fort. Geok Tepe ('Blue Hill') seems to refer to the general area, the modern town, a nearby village, and a mountain to the south. Skrine says that the fort enclosed 2.6 square kilometers (1 sq mi) or more, with mud walls 5.5 m (18 ft) thick and 3 m (10 ft) high on the inside and a 1.2 m (4 ft) dry ditch on the outside, although other dimensions are given. The area was part of the Akhal Oasis where streams coming down from the Kopet Dagh support irrigation agriculture. After Russian forces were defeated in 1879 Russia began to plan for a new campaign. The basic problem was moving up supplies since Akhal was an oasis surrounded by several hundred kilometers of semi-desert. In March 1880 Mikhail Skobelev was put in charge of the Trans-Caspian region. He adopted Lazarev's original plan of a slow and massive advance. Instead of Khoja Kale, he chose a base at Bami on the north side of the Kopet Dagh. At some point, he decided to take Geok Tepe by siege rather than a storm. He arrived at Chikislyar in May, advanced up the Atrek and Sumbar rivers, and by June 11 he occupied Bami. The build-up was slow, partly due to the shortage of camels. In July he made a reconnaissance in force to examine Geok Tepe. By the first half of December, he had enough men and supplies and moved out to occupy a fort he renamed "Samur" a few kilometers west of Geok Tepe. On 27 December Aleksey Kuropatkin arrived with five companies, having made a remarkable march across the desert from Khiva. By the end of the month, Skobelev had 4020 infantry, 750 cavalry as well as artillery, rockets, several machine guns, and heliographs for communications. About 40000 Tekkes were thought to be in the area. On January 1, 1881, he occupied Yanghi-Kala south of the fort to control the water supply and the following day chose the southeast corner as the point of attack and on the following day moved the main camp to Yanghi-Kala. On 4-8 January, the first parallel was built about 600 m (700 yds) from the fort and a second began. To protect this a detachment was sent to capture a small redoubt to the north and General Petrushevich was killed after rushing through the gate. The Tekkes made sorties on the 9th, 11th, and 16th. These were largely successful but cost many Turkoman lives. The camp was twice moved north to make it easier to deal with sorties. The Russians only had enough men to hold a siege line in the southeast corner and the Tekkes were usually allowed to move in and out on the north side of the fort. On January 18 a mine was started on the southeast side and two days later artillery made a breach in the south wall which was quickly repaired. On 23 January the mine was completed and loaded with 1,200 kg (2,600 lb) of powder.
