No. 11 of 13 copies printed on vellum there were also 88 copies printed on paper. Title with vignette numerous woodcut illustrations and large initial capitals. 1 vols. Folio 12-3/4 x 8-7/8 in.; 32.4 x 22.5 cm. This work consists of two important ordinances issued by the Spanish monarchy on November 20 1542 and June 4 1543. Under the active influence of Bartolomeo de las Casas "friend of the Indians" the new laws had the special design of ensuring better treatment of the Indians limiting the distribution of their lands and above all protecting them against enslavement by the conquering Spaniards. "Las Leyes Nuevas" are reprinted here in this fine facsimile from the copy on vellum in the British Museum and are followed by an English translation. Much of the book is taken up by the historical Introduction by Henry Stevens who denounces the Spanish mistreatment of the Indians. Ironically the Spanish crown was later forced to rescind the new laws by colonists who were outraged at having to give up their right to a quota of enslaved Indian laborers. A magnificent and impressive production by the Chiswick Press one of only 13 printed on vellum. Chiswick Press unknown

1718Best.-Nr. 68057Madrid. July 17 1803. Enforcing Spanish Marriage Restrictions in South America An addendum to the Spanish royal degree regarding the Pragmática Sanción de Matrimonios. The Pragmática legally mandated all males under the age of twenty five and all females under the age of twenty three of any class or race to secure formal consent from their father in order to marry and applied to Spain as well as all of its overseas possessions. This decree promulgates an amendment to that rule which made it an even more effective tool for preserving socio-economic hierarchy in the Spanish dominions confirming that the father "no estará obligado á dar la razon ni explicar la causa de su resistencia ó disenso." The king also orders local officials in the Spanish Empire to obey and publish the original decree with its amendments. This copy stamp-signed "Yo el Rey" was delivered to Santiago de Chile with the extensive manuscript docket and full signature of Royal Governor Luis Muñoz Guzman and the signature and rubric of his secretary. OCLC locates only one copy of this document at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Single bifolium printed on Sello Quarto paper. 1808Best.-Nr. 1609070023Madrid: La Imprenta Real 1808-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 146 p. 68 plates. Original sheep red spine label royal seal on title page. Wear and rubbing to boards some worming later paper label to tail of spine. Hinges cracking slightly marginal dampstain affecting a few plates. This book was issued by the Bourbon Royal Press. It depicts infantry practice and maneuvers of a Napoleonic era army. The Treaty of Fontainebleau 1807 between Charles IV of Spain and Napoleon I of France concerned the occupation of Portugal. Charles IV hoped it would lead to an alliance between the French Empire as in pre-revolutionary times. However six months later Napoleon turned on his new ally. The Spanish Army was ill-equipped and lacked tactical training and this book was a last-ditch effort to improve the state of the Spanish army's training. Overall it was not a success as Napoleon ridiculed the Spanish army as "the worst in Europe" and the British forces who had to work with it agreed. Madrid: La Imprenta Real hardcover
