I: Of Carnal Security in Virgin Churches Scans available. Leather over thick boards. Significant 2" gouge to leather bottom rear foreedge corner corners through. Edgewear as you would expect. Hubbed spine with title label. Title page notes posthumously produced by Shepard's son and Jonathan Mitchell pastor at Cambridge with no date listed. In a box below it reports a printing in London 1660. Binding is holding together reasonably well but would benefit by some restorative measures. Paper is in quite nice condition but has rippling throughout as is common with books of this era. Have not had any luck to speak researching this though it does appear tp predate other copies by several decades. Calling this very scarce is more than fair. With Notes and IllustrationsAn important and visually striking Victorian edition of the Book of Common Prayer published by John Murray in 1850 and lavishly decorated by the celebrated architect and designer Owen Jones. The 1850 issue reproduces the celebrated design first published by Murray in 1845 and is one of the notable achievements of early Victorian colour printing. The text is richly ornamented throughout with coloured borders initials and vignettes together with eight chromolithographic general and divisional title-pages. The illustrations include designs and adaptations after Old Masters and contemporary artists with material drawn by George Scharf and engraved by Samuel Williams. Printed by Vizetelly Brothers & Co.Of particular interest is the strong Brunel-family provenance. The volume bears the engraved bookplate of Isambard Brunel 18371902 eldest son of the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel together with an apparent ownership signature I. Brunel to the front endpaper. A further contemporary inscription records:Isambard Brunel / Left him by / Sarah Fox Wilder / October 31st / 1871.Sarah Fox Wilder née Hawes 18301871 was the daughter of Sophia Macnamara Hawes née Brunel sister of Isambard Kingdom Brunel making Sarah I.K. Brunel's niece and a first cousin of Isambard Brunel 18371902.Also mounted at the front is an autograph letter signed E. Woodfall dated 25 January 1862 and addressed to Mrs Wilder. An early manuscript note identifies the writer as the daughter of the printer of the Letters of Junius. This attribution is consistent with Elizabeth Woodfall 17681862 daughter of Henry Sampson Woodfall the celebrated printer associated with Junius who lived for many years at Dean's Yard Westminster. The letter refers to her willingness to write her name in Mrs Wilder's Prayer Book. No Elizabeth Woodfall inscription has been located in the present volume and the letter is therefore offered as associated Wilder-family provenance rather than as proof that it refers specifically to this copy. The volume retains its highly decorative original-style full calf binding with deeply embossed ecclesiastical ornament and central cross motifs. The binder's ticket reads BOUND BY EDMONDS & REMNANTS. This London firm also known as Remnant & Edmonds was particularly associated with elaborate mechanically embossed Victorian bindings.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESA visually impressive and historically interesting association copy in its elaborate embossed calf binding by Edmonds & Remnants.Binding rubbed and scuffed overall with significant surface wear and areas of leather loss at the extremities corners and joints consistent with age and use. Spine with six raised bands and gilt-lettered title label. The deeply embossed ecclesiastical decoration to both boards remains strong and clearly defined.Front inner hinge structurally weak/broken with sewing structure - For full description please contact the seller John Murray hardcover

The Prayer Book is unpaginated but collates pi1; A16-O16. Hymnal pp. xv ibl 681 1. Bound by "Watson Binder Marylebone" signed at foot of front pastedown in beige cloth decorated with inlaid silver quatrefoil and flower motifs. Calf turn-ins tooled in gilt. Silk endpapers. Gauffred edges. Two silver pillar and heart-shaped silver clasps one engraved with the letters "I.J" and the other with the date "1760". Both have the silver mark "IL". Most of the silver decorative inlay has worn off as has some of the calf on the turn-ins but otherwise the binding is in very good condition. Edward Watson worked at 239 Marylebone Road in the late nineteenth century. His work was exhibited at the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888 where he showed "five specimens of book-binding in hand-coloured calf: antique style and finish". There is no date on this lovely Prayer Book and Hymnal binding but it has the air of the Arts and Crafts Movement with its decorative flair and repurposed Georgian silver clasps. First published in 1560 following requests associated with Eton Winchester Oxford and Cambridge it carried the English Reformation settlement into the language of European humanist learning. The present 1604 John Norton issue STC 16429 is a title-page reissue of the London 1594 edition retaining the corresponding earlier printing and colophon. The volume includes from fol. 188 the separately titled Liber Psalmorum Davidis Prophetae et Regis translated from the Hebrew by Sebastian Münster and dated 1594.The principal title is enclosed within an elaborate architectural woodcut border incorporating personifications of the Seven Liberal Arts: Grammar Rhetoric Dialectic Arithmetic Music Astronomy and Geometry. Decorative woodcut initials appear throughout and the Münster Psalter title bears a substantial woodcut device.PROVENANCEEarly ownership inscription dated 1742.Unidentified institutional or library stamps to the title and preliminary material.CONDITION COLLATION & COPY NOTESA sound and characterful early seventeenth-century service book in 17th-century plain vellum.Binding with expected age-soiling rubbing staining and handling marks including darker staining to the lower board. An unidentified circular institutional or library stamp appears at the foot of the title partly affecting the woodcut border with evidence of partial erasure.
