In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed ‘John Rothenstein’. He believes that Dosse asked him ‘to review the John books’ Michael Holroyd’s biography of Augustus John and his book with Malcolm Easton on John’s art for Art and Artists. ‘I don’t think I’m dreaming as have some copies wh. you sent me at the time. I believe I explained that exceptional demands would make it difficult & I’ve also received an intimation that one of the Sunday papers is planning to invite me to do a special feature on the two books but I’m not at all sure whether I shall be able to accept.’ Dosse is ‘quite right in supposing that the Easton volume will be by no means complete’. 9 May 1974; on letterhead of Beauforest House, Newington, Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxford. unknown

réf. 15961Sir Robert Graham & Co. 2 Walbrook City of London. Both from London the first dated 30 March 1829 and the second 28 April 1829. Both items in fair condition lightly aged and worn. Both 1p. 4to and both signed 'Robert Graham & Co.' ONE 30 March 1829: Docketed on reverse: 'Letter from Sir R Graham respg Hunts Bill'. They have already informed him that his 'draft on Hunt of £20 was dishonoured & noted for nonpayment' and now 'have now to intimate that your draft on Foreman for the same amount has met the same fate'. Consequently they request a remittance. TWO 28 April 1829: They are 'rather surprised' that they have received no reply to their letter of 14 April. He has 'two Bills falling due next month - Viz on the 1st £135. 18. 5 & on the 4th. £346. 15 - & as the time is drawing very short we shall be glad to be informed what proportion of them you will be able to pay'. réf. 717213 February 1897; on Adam and Charles Black 'Survey of London' letterhead. 12mo 2 pp. Seventeen lines of text. On lightly aged and creased paper. Attractive arts and crafts letterhead. Sending his 'mosts profound sympathy in the danger which threatens Chelsea'. He will sign 'the paper . with the greatest of pleasure' although he anticipates 'very little good as a possible result'. Suggests a time at which the paper can be sent to him. He doubts whether it will be 'any consolation' but 'the London County Council are at this moment allowing the most beautiful suburb in London namely Frognal to be ruined by the erection of hideous barracks that they call flats. Their architect says that he can do nothing in the matter.' Besant's signature has a diagonal line through it apparently in the same ink and it is not clear whether this is a stylistic flourish or a cancellation by Besant possibly on the letter being returned to him with the papers referred to in the letter. Alice Westlake daughter of Thomas Hare and advocate of proportional representation was the wife of the jurist John Westlake 1828-1913; DNB of River House Chelsea Embankment. 13 February 1897; on Adam and Charles Black 'Survey of London' letterhead. unknown
