Virginia April 11th 1865 Mr. Downing Dear Sir - Having made my escape from the C.S. Military Prison at Charlotte N.C. on the 17 -Feby last and in making my way north through the state fortune directed me to the Stewart goald gold mines when I mett Mr H Downing your father with whom myself and my companions took supper on the 19th of Feby I would say it was the best supper I had for many months before. On my departure from them he your father requested me to write to you giving me your address should I be fortunate enough to make my within our lines "Thank" God I am again within those lines. He your father requested me to remember him to all his family and say that it is his intention to remain at the Stewart goald mines until the close of the war. I am glad to say that the old Gentleman was well and in good spirits at the time I saw him. I would be glad to hear from you at any time. I am Respy Lewis Maish. York Penn'a. Gold was first discovered at Little Meadow Creek in Cabarrus County North Carolina in 1799 by Conrad Reed marking the first documented discovery of gold in the United States. Gold was discovered in the Gold Hill district of southeastern Rowan County in 1824 approximately 20 miles north of the Reed Mine. By the 1840s Gold Hill had become a major mining center with 23 mines and a populationf of approximately 3000. The Barnhardt and Randolph mines were among the most productive with the Randolph shaft reaching 850 feet making it the deepest gold mine in the United States at the time. Mining declined after the California Gold Rush and the Civil War but resumed on a larger scale in the 1880s following the purchase of the mines and establishment of the New Gold Hill Mining Company based in London. Gold was shipped to England and substantial production continued until about 1915. The accompanying correspondence provides a contemporary record of the operation of the Gold Hill mines during the 1880s. Letters between mine manager William Treloar in Salisbury North Carolina and the London-based company discuss mining operations expenses production and financial matters. Despite significant gold production Treloar's correspondence indicates that operating costs remained high and profits were limited during the early 1880s. np unknown books
1867réf. BK0094London England 1867. Autograph letter signed by John O. Reay to his wife. 2 pp. 8 x 8 ½ inches no envelope. Very good plus. A letter by John O. Reay a tobacco merchant of Rockport Indiana covering English society government poverty and manners and the European reaction to the recent execution of Emperor Maximilian in Mexico. Reay had traveled to England apparently in connection with the tobacco trade but found himself socially isolated despite the scale and variety of the city: "I am in a great place & such odd company. I have not seen a face yet I have formed an intimacy with. Yesterday . I saw all the elite of London. I also went to the House of Parliament but was not permitted to enter it-no letters of introduction. These fine places does not make up the absence of home & dear wife & children. I have found a fine place & full of fine things . If I had someone to be cheerful to once a while it would be quite a relief but I have not formed any acquaintances but an introduction & a friendly grasp of hand will do. That is not much company." Reay found English speech unexpectedly rapid and complained of the formality and reserve of the people he encountered. He contrasts London's wealth and attractions with its visible poverty and overcrowding writing that England was "a quiet country & a good one" except that it was "so nearly filled up" and that he had seen more poverty in London than he had expected. The letter also records discussion among French residents concerning the execution of Emperor Maximilian who had been captured and shot by forces of the restored Mexican Republic the previous month. Reay reports that the Frenchmen in his lodging house mourned Maximilian's death regretted France's failure to assist the Confederacy during the American Civil War and predicted a future conflict involving France and England. He closes with comments on the poor state of the tobacco market his health after the Atlantic crossing and his desire to return home. . unknown

1875réf. 631143The Builder London 1875. Unframed Print. Very Good Condition. Published in The Builder in 1877 A Vision of the City of London Constructed on the Plan Left by Sir Christopher Wren offers a striking glimpse into an unrealized future. Following the devastation of the Great Fire of 1666 Wren proposed a radical redesign of the City: a network of wide boulevards radiating avenues and classical squares that would replace the tangled medieval street plan. Though his vision was never implemented'thwarted by entrenched property rights and the urgency of reconstruction'this map imagines what might have been. It presents a meticulously ordered cityscape with key landmarks like St. Paul's Cathedral the Bank of England and the Tower of London positioned within a symmetrical almost Parisian framework. The Thames anchors the composition its docks and ships reinforcing London's mercantile identity. More than a technical rendering the map is a symbolic act of Victorian retrospection an editorial fantasy that mourns the missed opportunity for civic grandeur while celebrating Wren's architectural legacy. It reflects 19th-century ideals of order beauty and rational design casting the chaotic reality of London's streets against a backdrop of imagined elegance. For the modern viewer it serves as both a historical artifact and a narrative shell: a what-if that dramatizes the tension between visionary planning and pragmatic constraint.
