1745rif. 14742Augsburg: Published by Martin Engelbrecht 1745. Engraving with thick early colour with gold highlights. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some minor foxing in the margins. Image size: 9 3/4 x 7 inches. A majestic portrait with stunning early colour of Queen Elisabetha Christina by the celebrated Augsburg engraver Martin Engelbrecht. Martin Engelbrecht was one of the most prolific engravers and printsellers in Augsburg at the close of the 17th century. Along with his brother Christian Martin dominated the print trade producing some of the finest prints of his day. His outstanding portraits and landscape studies are beyond compare and his religious and allegorical engravings display a technical aptitude superior to many of his contemporaries. Martin had great success with his optical prints which were used in perspective boxes. He is best remembered for his equestrian portraits depicting European nobility and his engravings of Queen Elizabeth and Joseph II are numbered amongst his best work. This stunning portrait of Queen Elizabeth is a rare example with vibrant early colour and is a wonderful example of Engelbrecht's superior work. Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern the Queen of Prussia faced the challenging role of being a royal wife to Frederick the Great. Their marriage was a politically motivated one arranged to secure Frederick's release from his father's oppressive regime. From the very beginning it was clear that Frederick resented this union. He did not show any affection or interest in Elisabeth and she had to endure a difficult and somewhat lonely position at the Berlin Court. In spite of her husband's neglect Elisabeth took on a very public role in Prussia. She handled representational duties presided over court functions and hosted events even when Frederick did not attend. She was known for her charity work especially during the Seven Years' War where she became a symbol of Prussian resilience in the face of crisis. Her influence extended to matters of state and she actively participated in political literature. Elisabeth also successfully introduced silk cultivation to Prussia. As queen dowager after Frederick's death she continued to have an active role in public life and provided valuable insight and advice to the royal family. Despite the challenging circumstances of her marriage Elisabeth Christine left a lasting legacy as a strong compassionate and influential figure in European history. This work by Frederick II the King of Prussia also known as Frederick the Great presents his political philosophy including thoughts on morality social structure and individuals/citizens and their role in the health of nations. It is perhaps most important for the response it elicited from Voltaire who wrote a satirical letter in response in which he ironically praised the ruler for his ability to simultaneously applaud the humble virtues of the everyman represented here as a cobbler while sending many such men to their deaths in military campaigns specifically the Seven Years War. While Voltaire mocked this particular effort the two corresponded regularly and Voltaire even called Frederick a 'philosopher king.' Frederick published other political works as well including a rebuttal to Machiavelli's The Prince. Pierre Mortier hardcover books

1815rif. 3633626/03/1815. In 1815 Berlin had been liberated from Napoleon for just 2 years and the Palais am Wilhelmsplatz in Berlin was a key aristocratic residence near the Wilhelmstrasse which was becoming a hub for government and high society. This area was crucial for military leadership and elite housing near the Brandenburg Gate often used by Prussian royal families and high-ranking officials during the post-Napoleonic era. Composed just days after Napoleon Bonaparte returned to power in France March 1815 and Prussia had reason to fear another invasion this letter offers a glimpse into the private concerns of the Prussian royal family at a moment of major European upheaval. Despite the looming political crisis the correspondence reflects the everyday workings of aristocratic patronage property management and family influence within the Prussian court. Princess Charlotte Autograph letter signed March 26 1815 to Prince Friedrich of Prussia just 6 days after Napoleon's arrival in Paris for his famed 100 days. ""Esteemed uncle A gray eternity has passed since my eyes last gazed upon your gentle countenance I feel anxious and I long to see you again. Two matters urge me today to burden you with my lines; firstly to find out about your health and how my uncle is doing; and secondly it is a request to you on behalf of Ms. von Kleist who would so much like to live in some rooms in your unused Palais at the Wilhelmsplatz. Aunt Hußen has already written to you in this regard and you didn’t know whether the King would allow it. Now I received a letter from Papa yesterday who told me that he cannot grant the request as it concerns the Johanniter Palais and is therefore at the disposal of his brother Heinrich; so he leaves it up to you and as one can see he will not mind; and is it not true that you are not using the whole large building at all and that you will heed my request all the more so since it is your aunt Auguste’s wish I am counting on your generosity and kindness my one and beloved uncle and I am waiting for a favorable response; as I am kissing your gracious hands in my mind until it can soon be done in actuality – your Charlotte"" <img class=""alignnone wp-image-25018 size-post-window"" src=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20231204144051/Folder-site-11-1600x1327.jpg"" alt=""historical memorabilia dealer"" width=""1600"" height=""1327"" /> unknown books
