1908réf. 338961908. Enrico Caruso an Italian opera singer was one of the greatest tenors in history. Caruso was also the most popular singer in any genre in the first two decades of the 20th Century and one of the most important pioneers of recorded music. Caruso's popular recordings and his extraordinary voice known for its mature power beauty and unequalled richness of tone made him perhaps the best-known operatic star of his era. Such was his influence on singing style many subsequent tenors have been his heirs. During his career Caruso made over 260 recordings and made millions of dollars from the sale of his 78 rpm records. While Caruso sang at many of the world's great opera houses including La Scala in Milan and Covent Garden in London he is best known as the leading tenor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for 17 years. “Il Trovatore” by legendary opera composer Giuseppe Verdi first premiered on January 19 1853 and has been a major operatic staple since. The work is so lush with melody that all of the world’s greatest singers have attempted one of the major roles that are the foundation of the work. “Il Trovatore” has also drawn much attention for its quick-fire libretto that jumps quickly through time much of the major drama taking place off-stage. Caruso played Manrico in performances of “Il Trovatore” and a famous photograph shows Caruso in that role circa 1908. This is that very photograph signed boldly by Caruso. It is our first signed photograph of Caruso dressed for one of his great roles in 17 years. <img class=""alignnone wp-image-25018 size-post-window"" src=""https://cdn.raabcollection.com/wp-content/uploads/20231204144051/Folder-site-11-1600x1327.jpg"" alt="""" width=""1600"" height=""1327"" /> unknown books
1790réf. 40866Italy 1790. Oblong quarto 219 x 279 mm. Sewn. Notated in black ink on 10-stave rastrum-ruled paper. i title 54 i blank pp. Scored for two soprano voices Corimba and Calto and strings. The duet for the same characters is accompanied by strings oboes and horns. Minor soiling to title and final blank page; occasional browning and minor foxing; small early label with "293" in manuscript to upper inner corner of title. Drawn from the opera La disfatta di Duntalamo re di Theuta first performed in Rome at the Teatro Argentina in 1789. Caruso "studied first with his father Giuseppe and then with Nicola Sala at the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini Naples. He began composing operas at an early age achieving success both in Italy and abroad where his works were performed almost every year. . Caruso wrote many operas; his comic operas were sometimes reworked under different titles to satisfy the constant demand of the theatres. Their comedy always has a touch of pathos and intimacy typical of 18th-century Neapolitan opera. Orchestral numbers and excerpts were widely distributed in contemporary manuscripts and were published in Florence London Paris and Rome. The librettos he set whether by illustrious poets Metastasio Bertati Rossi or little-known writers were always of high quality. He is notable for his extended melodies often reminiscent of Paisiello and for their formal construction. Although he continued to compose into the 19th century he was unwilling to accept the innovations of Romanticism remaining firmly linked to the older Neapolitan style. For this reason in the last years of his life he turned his attention almost exclusively to sacred music which contain some interesting stylistic features and instrumental music." 1909réf. 007852New York: The Metropolitan Company 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Paper pastedown on boards. Good. 8vo. 24 by 15 cm. 71 pp. With two plates each with a photo of the respective singers. The plates are on a glossy stock and accompanied by tissue guards. Binding solid in terms of holding book together but spine perished with all of original paper pastedown gone. You see mostly the flexible card that is essential for the binding architecture and this somewhat minimizes the conspicuousness of the missing layer in this volume at least in our view but you do catch a glimpse of the mull the fabric mesh binding material and the gatherings and obviously this is undesirable. The boards' paper pastedown are heavily stained and soiled. The prelim leaves and final leaves are stained. Otherwise the leaves are generally clean with very occasional light stains and the copy is solid. On the title page the address for the Metropolitan Company publishers is crossed out -- it was printed as a 42nd Street address and in ink below is written 8-12 East 34 Street. The opera house -- the original or old house was on Broadway and took up the entire block of 39th to 40th Street with its back elevation on Seventh Avenue. We have not looked into this. We assume the inked address is the accurate one at the time. We have no idea who would have made this correction nor whether this correction was made in other copies. We do not think this will be an issue for most people interested in the title. The Metropolitan Company hardcover books
1982réf. 27372Hollywood Calif.: Hal Sloane Associates . Very Good. 1982. Plastic comb binding. modest wear to edges and corners plastic-comb binding fully intact. B&W and color graphics facsimiles Remember this incredible multi-faceted extravaganza that virtually dominated the musical consciousness of Hollywood over a five-day period in the Fall of 1982 No Well don't feel too bad because neither does anybody else: it never happened. What we have here is a prospectus/proposal for the event which was designed to be a Very Big Deal indeed with no fewer than ten count 'em ten individual elements: R.A.V.E. International Rock Art Video Expo; The Museum of Rock Art an art show "compiled from the holdings of the world's only museum dedicated to the art of Rock N' Roll" which had been founded a year or so earlier by co-promoter Paul S. Caruso; the Great Rock N' Roll Time Machine a multimedia presentation; the first-ever auction of "art and memorabilia associated with Rock N' Roll and it's sic heroes"; The Great American Rock N' Roll Supermarket a shopping bazaar for rock memorabilia; the World's Greatest Video Arcade this was the 80s after all; live musical performances; the Great American Rock N' Roll Sweepstakes; a "Battle of the Bands"; and last but not least the Great American Rock N' Roll Midway "consisting of the newest thrill rides from around the world." You certainly can't accuse the promoters and prospective producers of thinking small nor of not having the chops to pull it off even though they ultimately didn't: Hal Sloane 1924-2010 was an entertainment industry veteran whose varied resume included the production of a series of "Teen-Age Fairs" during the 1960s a fictionalized version of one such event which figures in Paul Thomas Anderson's recent film LICORICE PIZZA; Paul Caruso was a young entrepreneur who in 1981 opened the Museum of Rock Art on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood an enterprise that claimed to have "the world's largest collection of rock posters . . . as well as original artwork album covers concert tickets photographs sculpture and a fast-growing videotape library." The Museum closed at one point for earthquake retrofit reopening in a Hollywood Blvd. location in 1985 where it remained until circa 1989 I've found no press documenting its demise. Now more than thirty years later it still has an online presence of sorts with Mr. Caruso and presumably his personal collection which always formed the Museum's core having apparently resettled in Maine. This approximately 30-page prospectus rather crudely designed has background information on Caruso's and Sloane's previous achievements promotional descriptions of the Expo's various elements the most interesting perhaps being the description of "The Great Rock & Roll Time Machine" a blank contract for prospective advertisers/sponsors and a detailed budget for the project projecting a net profit of $211250. The latter is formatted with a parallel column giving the corresponding line-item budget figures for the 1968 edition of the Teen-Age Fair. It's a curiosity for sure albeit a fascinating one -- the only remaining trace perhaps of a Big Rock 'n' Roll Dream that never made it off the drawing board. . Hal Sloane Associates [?] unknown books
