The final paragraph deals with the method by which they ‘might together concoct what is wanted’ by tying together ‘the parliamentary papers & division lists & the Times Reports’ going through them and picking out what is ‘most salient & telling’. ‘If it isn’t done there will be a Row. From front jacket flap Over the past sixty-four years fifty-three different authors have written articles or monographs about one or other aspect of the first postage stamps of China. Such has been the interest in the past. In this volume. Philip Ireland records the discoveries of his predecessors and his own the whole comprising a complete record. Such has not been published before. The subject is charming. Robert Hart first proposed a Chinese Postal Service in 1861 but it was not until 1878 that under his direction Hart saw the Maritime Customs Post opened to the public. The unapproved and approved designs the manufacture of the 25 cliches from which each sheet was printed the history of the various printings with the re-arrangement of the cliches the descriptions of usage sometimes in combination with the stamps of France Hongkong Japan and the United States the curious seal Cancellations and Handstamps the primitive methods of carrying the mail all contribute attractive themes of interest to a subject which fascinates many philatelists. Three letters from theater historian and biographer Joseph Norton Ireland to collector and biographer Douglas Taylor . 1. Letter dated December 8th 1897. 1 pp. Ireland tells Taylor of the decline in his physical and mental faculties before he summarizes his collection which includes the Treasurer's books of the Old Park Theater portraits & photographs of performers and bound sets of playbills. Finally he offers a nearly complete set of John Boydell's Shakespeare engravings for the amount of $40. 2. I think the whole collection is worth rather more than that." 3. Letter dated March 4th 1898. 1 pp. Contains a short list of Ireland's collection of autograph letters all bound which he suspects "will be of little use" to Taylor.
