First edition 8vo pp. x 4 212; engraved frontispiece title-p. printed in red and black; contemporary paper-covered boards rebacked in tan calf blindstamped title on spine; edges rubbed corners worn; good and sound. Second edition, [ii], 39, [1]pp., recent marbled boards. A heroic poem about the bloody but inconclusive battle at Talavera, southwest of Madrid (July 27-28, 1809), in which a combined British-Spanish force under Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) forced the French army of King Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, to withdraw from field. The author, John Wilson Croker, was a high-Tory politician and man of letters, one of the founders of the legendary Quarterly Review and for nearly thirty years its primary contributor. Wellington himself singled out this poem for praise. Surprisingly uncommon: we find no copy of the first or this second edition, Copac locates the third and later editions only.

1912réf. 35044London: Adam & Charles Black 1912. First Edition reissued. With 79 wonderful colourplates of the Emerald Isle from oil paintings by Irish artist Francis S. Walker each with a captioned tissue-guard. Tall 8vo in the publisher's beautiful original sage green cloth decorated in a all-over design the front cover with shamrocks in bright green surrounding an Irish harp in gilt and with gilt lettering the spine decorated with the green shamrocks and lettering in gilt. xix 212 pp. A very fine handsome and well preserved copy the green cloth very attractive and fresh the gilt and shamrocks vivid and bright internally fresh the plates all in very fine order and the text solid and clean but for a little light spotting which only occasionally shows itself a touch more to the first few leaves hinges strong. ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TO FIND AND MOST APPEALING OF ALL THE BOOKS IN THE SERIES. IRELAND represents one of the best of Adam and Charles Black’s fine illustrated travel books. The enchanting countryside of the Emerald Island is laid out before us in words and pictures. This edition has 79 of Walker's wonderful paintings. The edition of 1916 would only have 50 and those by an entirely different artist one not native to Ireland. This is also the first appearance of Frank Mathew's text and the green and gilt cloth seems more fitting the subject to us than the purple and yellow cloth of the later edition. Walker was native to County Meath and studied art at both the Royal Dublin Society and the Royal Hibernian Academy of Dublin. Several of his paintings can be viewed today at the National Gallery of Ireland also in Dublin. Adam & Charles Black hardcover

1987Previous owner's bookplate to front end paper. No marks or inscriptions. Extremely faint crease to front cover, none to rear or to spine. A lovely clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 80pp. This work of full-page colour photographs by Paul Graham deals with the small but insistent signs of deep political division within the landscape of Northern Ireland in the 1980s. 'The foreword by Declan McGonagle contrasts the work against the melodramatic imagery of the North and places the Troubles in a broader framework of the marginalisation and denial of power that has been the hallmark of British cononialism for centuries. The main text by Gerry Badger examines the genre of reportage photography and positions this work within a new generation of intelligent documentary photography that represents ideas rather than furnishing simple visual records or illustrating words.'

Illustrated with the engraved frontispiece portrait. 8vo bound in later half-calf over marbled boards the spine with raised bands compartments decorated with panel designs in gilt black morocco lettering label gilt. 2 135; 62 appendix pp. A very well preserved unpressed and crisp copy the portrait with a bit of old evidence of damp unobtrusive and visually mostly confined to the verso. An English soldier adventurer and Jacobite conspirator Bernardi's involvement in an assassination plot against William III led to his subsequent forty-year imprisonment without proper trial in Newgate. While the principal conspirators were executed Bernardi and five others were held without coming to trial initially for a year ostensibly to gather further evidence. However their continued imprisonment was sanctioned by subsequent Acts even after William III's death. Bernardi's life in prison was made difficult by effects of the old wounds he had sustained in the 1670s. Bernardi also complained that his confinement in the "dismal and loathsome" gaol had cost him "above seven hundred pounds for his lodging". J. Newcomb hardcover

Des gravures et des vignettes. (I : (2) ff., 1-12(12), 13(10) ; II : (2) ff., 1-11(12), 12(14)) Brochure bleue imprimée originale. Edition Originale, rare.
