réf. 02662London: T. and J. Egerton 1793. Scarce With Hand-Colored Aquatints IRELAND Samuel. Picturesque Views on the River Medway from the Nore to the Vicinity of its Source in Sussex: With observations on the public buildings and other works of art in its neighbourhood. London: T. and J. Egerton 1793. First edition the scarce hand-colored issue. Octavo 9 x 6 1/8 in; 229 x 155 mm. xii 206 1 adv. 1 pp. Extra hand-colored engraved title-page black and white map and twenty-eight hand-colored aquatint plates. Bound by Root & Son stamp-signed in full brown morocco with multiple gilt-rolled borders and gilt corner-pieces gilt-rolled turn-ins. Gilt-ruled and ornamented compartments. Top edge gilt. A fine clean and tight copy of a book generally found with plates in sepia. A handsome and important English topographical work by Samuel Ireland recording the River Medway and its environs at a moment when picturesque travel and antiquarian interest were at their height. Ireland traces the river from its maritime mouth at the Nore through Kent and into Sussex combining scenic prospects with informed commentary on churches castles bridges estates and other works of architectural and historical interest. Although often encountered with plates printed in sepia or left uncolored copies with the full suite of plates carefully hand-colored as here are decidedly uncommon and greatly enhance the book's visual appeal. Issued by T. and J. Egerton among the leading publishers of late eighteenth-century topographical books Picturesque Views on the River Medway stands as a fine example of the genre and an especially attractive survival in a high-quality signed morocco binding. A desirable copy of a work prized by collectors of English topography aquatint illustration and finely bound travel books. "Samuel Ireland 17-1800 was one of the most successful artists who devoted himself to the career of topographic print-making. In the ten years between 1790 and 1800 he brought out six books of views containing in all some two hundred and eighty plates all aquatinted by himself after his own drawings. He began his artistic career as a copier of prints and a dealer in them and in 1760 gained a medal from the Society of Arts. The success of his first book A Picturesque Tour through Holland Brabant and part of France 1790 encouraged him to other work of the sort and in 1793 and 1793 appeared to other books Picturesque Views on the River Thames and Medway and later again on the Avon 1795 and Wye 1797 and posthumously the Severn 1824. His son William was the notorious Shakespeare forger. The London bindery of W. Root & Son consistently turned-out excellent work both on fine bindings as here and on trade bindings and sets. Packer lists the firm in business in Red Lion Square in 1899-1901 and the December 1942 issue of The Rotarian notes with regret that W. Root had been bombed out uprooted of their premises on Paternaster Row during the 1941 Blitz. Abbey Scenery 428. Prideaux p. 341. London: T. and J. Egerton, 1793 unknown

1807réf. 708151807. I Am Inclined to Give Credit to Her Assertions": An Irish Magistrate's Defense of an 1807 Rape Victim Manuscript. Trial. Ireland. Account of a Rape. County Carlow Ireland June 25 1807. 11" x 7" 27.9 x 17.8 cm leaf docketed on verso. Single leaf manuscript on paper measuring 11" x 7" 27.9 x 17.8 cm. Unbound as issued with contemporary legal docketing and extensive manuscript annotations by the presiding magistrate to the lower margin of the recto and across sections of the verso. Light horizontal folds from period mailing/filing mild uniform browning and light wear along the edges otherwise remarkably fresh and completely legible throughout. $1500. A powerful and hauntingly detailed original sworn manuscript record detailing an account of sexual violence in rural County Carlow paired with a rare candid commentary by the presiding local magistrate regarding the legal competence and credibility of the female victim. Taken before Gilbert Fitzgerald a prominent local Magistrate of the Peace this manuscript records the direct testimony of Margaret Janson regarding an assault by Myles Barin. The body of the information vividly captures the victim's contemporaneous narrative: "Myles Barin opened his small cloths informant asked him what he was going to do to her he answered he would ride her then extending her legs and endeavouring to force something into her body and struggled with her near an hour." In 19th-century Irish and British common law victims of sexual crime faced formidable legal obstacles often compounding the trauma of the assault itself. Female testimony was frequently met with deep skepticism stringent requirements for physical corroboration and strict adherence to oaths that marginalized uneducated or illiterate witnesses. What elevates this document from a routine legal record to a remarkable artifact of historical criminal justice is Magistrate Fitzgerald's handwritten commentary appended directly to the foot of the document: "I did not swear Informant to this Information as she appeared to be entirely ignorant of the nature of an Oath but the facts are strongly corroborated by other evidence and I am inclined to give credit to her assertions." Fitzgerald's willingness to bypass strict procedural religious swearing while explicitly validating Janson's truthfulness. unknown

Ids A series of legal pamphlets both criminal and administrative pertaining to Ireland in 1832. The era of the Irish Reform Act 1832 an Act of Parliament that introduced wide-ranging changes to the election laws of Ireland. Note - v1. - The Duke had been since 1817 Grand Master of the Irish Orangemen and he was accused of making use of this position to pose as the defender of Protestantism and to tamper with the loyalty of the Army. These accusations were only set at rest by the Duke's categorical denial and by the assistance he rendered in suppressing the whole of the Orange Societies at the request of the government. DNB. Joseph Phillips a radical and supporter of the 1832 Reform Bill took the opportunity of the Duke's unsuitable opposition to the same bill to publish an attack that included the accusation that the Duke was responsible for the death of his servant Sellis. For this Phillips was jailed. London & Dublin. 1832-1833 hardcover

réf. 15438A celebrated and beautifully illustrated first edition of Samuel Irelands 1789 journey through the Netherlands with 43 atmospheric aquatints after his own drawingsincluding views of Amsterdam The Hague Rotterdam Leiden and Haarlemcapturing the Dutch landscape and cities on the eve of the French Revolution.First edition of Samuel Irelands celebrated picturesque journey through the Netherlands Brabant and France undertaken in the autumn of 1789 immediately before the French Revolution. Ireland d. 1800 an English print dealer collector draughtsman and engraver relates his journey in the form of letters addressed to the antiquary Francis Grose c.17301791. His account combines travel observations with extensive remarks on art architecture collections landscape and everyday life. The Dutch part of the journey is particularly extensive. Ireland travelled from Hellevoetsluis and Brielle through Rotterdam Dordrecht Delft The Hague Scheveningen Leiden Haarlem and Amsterdam continuing through North Holland Utrecht Vianen Gorinchem Breda and Bergen op Zoom. The illustrations include views of Rotterdam Delft The Hague and Huis ten Bosch Scheveningen Leiden Haarlem and Paviljoen Welgelegen Amsterdams Herengracht and Amstel Zaandam Utrecht Breda and numerous other locations. The atmospheric aquatints were made after Irelands own drawings and were largely engraved by the Dutch artist Cornelis Apostool 17621844 who later became director of the Rijksmuseums predecessor the Koninklijk Museum in Amsterdam. The plates are captioned and dated 1 May 1790. The use of aquatint was particularly well suited to Irelands picturesque conception of travel giving the views the tonal qualities of wash drawings.4º: geb. in 2 halfkunstleren banden 16 213 6 209 p. ill. op de 2 titelpaginas vignetten in aquatint 2 etsen en 43 aquatinten. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request – – IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - FLAWLESS COPY BRAND NEW PRISTINE NEVER OPENED -- The Roman occupation of Britain lasted nearly 400 years and produced a wide-ranging and radical transformation of the country affecting virtually every aspect of life: town-development transport agriculture industry and lifestyle. Rome also opened Britain to the intellectual and religious diversity of the empire. Yet there is plentiful evidence in both the literary record and the ever-increasing archaeological material to show that Britain -- a late-comer to Rome’s empire -- often resisted external influence and imbued imported Roman ways with native characteristics. This text seeks to introduce the history of Rome’s involvement with Britain in a succinct but readable way providing an overview of the country’s already diverse culture before the advent of the legions; tracing the historical development of the province under Rome and how the Romans maintained their hold on it; and tackling topics such as administration development of towns and the countryside religion and art. The aim of the book is not simply to supply information but to invite the reader to ask questions and delve deeper into Rome’s most northerly province. -- with a bonus offer--; 520-hillss; Hill Stephen J. ; Stanley Ireland ; Roman Britain GREAT BRITAIN HISTORY 449 MEDIEVAL The Roman occupation of Britain lasted nearly 400 years and produced a wide-ranging and radical transformation of the country affecting virtually every aspect of life: . 1996. 1853991406 .
