1874Best.-Nr. 101468Paris February 4 1874. 1874. Very good. - Over 110 words penned on 8-1/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide laid paper with an attached blank leaf. The French general & politician Francois de Chabaud-Latour thanks the recipient for his praise explaining that the letter reached him after extensive detours "La lettre que vous m'avez fait l'honneur de m'ecrire a ete me rechercher a Versailles a Tonnerre et autres lieux avant de me m'arriver a Paris." The letter which you did the honor of writing me went in search of me in Versailles in Tonnerre and other places before reaching me in Paris. He goes on to explain his contentment with his retirement and solitude and modestly writes that his services will soon be forgotten and that the autograph the recipient requested is already without value. Signed "de Chabaud-Latour". There is offsetting along the right edge else very good. The French general and politician Francois-Henri-Ernest Baron de Chabaud-Latour 1804-1885 became a captain in the engineering corps at the age of 22. He participated in the sieges of fortifications along the Danube and volunteered for the expedition to Algeria in 1830. As aide-de-camp to the Duke of Orleans he took part in the Belgian campaign and the siege of Antwerp. He was part of various campaigns in Algeria including the expedition of the Iron Gates being awarded the Legion of Honor for his service. In 1840 he was tasked with the fortification of Paris and was responsible for the construction works for the eastern part of the Paris fortifications. An Orleanist officer he resisted the French Revolution of 1848. He resigned from the army after the abdication of the king. He was recalled and was fully reinstated after the coup d'etat of 1851. He went on to the position of senior commander of engineering in Algeria participating in several campaigns which led to his promotion to divisional general where he demonstrated his planning skills. Chabaud-Latour built Fort-Napoleon in the territory occupied by the Beni Raten tribe and constructed hydraulic dams before being recalled to Paris to participate in the Committee of Fortifications the Ecole Polytechnigue and more. Paris, February 4, 1874. unknown
