Kort na de bevrijding reisde fotograaf Cas Oorthuys (1908-1975) verschillende keren naar Antwerpen om de schoonheid van de stad en haar bewoners vast te leggen. Oorthuys' foto's zijn uniek, ook omdat uit deze naoorlogse periode vrijwel geen andere foto?s bekend zijn. Destijds bleven de circa zevenhonderd foto's grotendeels ongepubliceerd, nu is uit deze foto's voor het eerst een uitgebreide selectie gemaakt. Oorthuys koos voor een optimistische kijk op het heden, niet op wat er in de oorlog was gebeurd. De voor hem zo typerende stijl is in deze foto's al herkenbaar: een hoog standpunt, de mens altijd centraal in treffende straatbeelden, prachtig strijklicht met lange schaduwen, verrassende diagonalen en ruime horizonnen, in een lijnenspel van scheepskranen en in het zonlicht dat speelt met de ochtendnevel. "In de lens van Oorthuys begint de steenmassa waaruit de stad bestaat een zelfstandig leven te leiden, krijgen haar bewoners een gezicht, verraadt haar sfeer dat ze een haven is." George van Cauwenbergh is de bekendste Antwerpse stadsgids. Hij publiceerde verscheidene boeken over de stad en op stadszender ATV vertelt hij over bijzondere Antwerpse gebouwen. Willem Ellenbroek, journalist en publicist, schreef het nawoord over Cas Oorthuys. Boek is in goede staat.
