1954réf. 491Lancaster: American Physical Society 1954. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF A PIONEERING PAPER IN MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING. Carr and Purcell "showed that a simple modification of Hahn's spin-echo method reduces drastically the effect of diffusion" in magnetic resonance thus increasing its reliability Aligizaki 213. Otto Hahn recognized "the sensitivity of the spin echo MR signal on molecular diffusion. While he proposed that one could measure the diffusion coefficient of a solution containing spin-labeled molecules he did not propose a direct method for doing so. In 1954 in this paper Carr and Purcell proposed a complete mathematical and physical framework for such a measurement using Hahn's NMR spin echo sequence. They realized that the echo magnitude could be sensitized solely to the effects of random molecular spreading caused by diffusion in a way that permits a direct measurement. "Carr and Purcell's proposed MR sequences sensitized the MR spin echo to the effects of diffusion" Johansen-Berg Diffusion MRI 6. As a result they were able to develop "a rigorous mathematical framework to measure the diffusion coefficient from such sequences. This elevated NMR to being a 'gold standard' for measuring molecular diffusion" ibid. CONDITION & DETAILS: First edition in original wraps. Lancaster: American Physical Society. Very very slight wear at the foot of the spine and at the edges of the wraps. Very good condition. American Physical Society paperback

1935réf. 158578N.p.: N.p. 1935. Vintage photograph of architect Timothy L. Pflueger civil engineer Charles H. Purcell editor and writer Rob Wagner and photographer Walter G. Swanson standing at the base of the then-incipient San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge circa 1935. Annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the verso. Purcell and Pflueger both oversaw the construction of the Bay Bridge-Purcell being the Chief Engineer and Pflueger serving on the committee of architects for the project. Rob L. Wagner is best remembered today as the editor and publisher of "Script" a left-leaning weekly literary film magazine published in Beverly Hills between 1929 and 1949. A lifelong Socialist and advocate for progressive causes Wagner used "Script" to give a voice to blacklisted screenwriters including Dalton Trumbo and Gordon Kahn and prominent leftists including Upton Sinclair Max Eastman and William C. deMille. While Wagner's involvement with Pflueger Purcell and Swanson is unclear it is evident that Wagner maintained many connections with powerful leaders in California. 10 x 8 inches.
