Original publisher's teal blue cloth lettered gilt on spine. The publisher's own retained copy with their stamp on the front endpaper reading 'file copy.' Reviews on jacket one comparing the book a novel of the great war with Sherriff's 'Journey's End.' Purcell was with the 4th Green Howards 50th Div. captured in Chemin-des-Dames offensive in 1918: this is a fictionalised account of experiences on active service & in captivity. ""The scenes of Mr Purcell's book are the Aisne at the moment of the great German offensive of 1918 & the German prison-camp to which that offensive brought him. Mr Purcell is on the side of the angels of patriotism & good temper & his work is illuminated by very pleasant humour. The best story is that of the escape of two British officers from the lavatory of a Berlin railway station."" Fine in very good indeed d/w J. M. Dent, hardcover
