1929réf. 6596Asuncion Paraguay 1929. Still very good. Thirty-five original photographs each approximately 7 x 9.5 inches. Oblong small folio album contemporary quarter sheep and cross-hatched cloth boards strong tied at gutter. Spine beginning to split and to fray at ends; boards loosening. Typed label affixed to front board; contemporary ink presentation inscription to front pastedown. Preponderance of photographs with typed caption labels in lower corners. Images generally clear and strong. An attractive souvenir album with large studio photographs of Asuncion Paraguay presented to noted American author Frances Parinson Keyes during her grand tour of Spain and South America in 1929 and 1930. The album is signed by George Lewis Kreeck the U.S. Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Paraguay for the second half of the 1920s. Most photos present here show various buildings and sites of Asuncion including the Palacio de los Lopez the Cabildo the Port of Asuncion with several ships docked at harbor the Ministries of War and the Navy the Stock Exchange the "El Paraiso" department store the Asuncion train station private mansions and much more. There is also a group portrait of elementary school students and two group portraits of graduates from the Asuncion School of Aviation. Another photo is a seated portrait of Jose Eligio Ayala President of Paraguay from 1923 to 1928 and Minister of Finance from 1928 to 1930. Four photos show cavalry and infantry regiments of the Paraguayan army a company of cadets from the local military school and a group of French officers hired to train the Paraguayan officer corps. The other photos show meat processing plants near Asuncion Frigorigico San Antonio and Frigorifico Leibig's piles of treated wood awaiting export and a candid shot of a very pleased looking Paraguayan bull. All but two photographs are captioned with typed labels. The images of the Paraguayan give the impression of a sleepy colonial backwater although earlier in the decade the area had been subject to intense fighting during a two-year civil war. Frances Parkinson Keyes the recipient of this album was a prolific American novelist journalist editor and biographer. She gained popularity as author of the memoir "Letters from a Senator's Wife" which described life in Washington D.C. with her husband Henry Wilder Keyes a three-term Senator from New Hampshire. In the mid-1920s Keyes went on a world tour traveling from Cuba to Hawaii and thence through Southeast Asia the Middle East and Europe and published articles about her trip in the magazines "Good Housekeeping" and "Better Homes & Gardens." The popularity of her travel writing led her undertake a second tour in 1929 to the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville and then to South America where she traveled through Venezuela Brazil Paraguay Argentina and Chile. It was on this trip that she received the present album and ab out this journey that she published her travel notes in 1931 "Silver seas and Golden Cities: A Joyous Journey Through Latin Lands. unknown
