He is writing to her after having ‘applied to my friend Miss Wauchope of Niddrie on the same subject’. 15 March 1830; 6 Royal Circus, Edinburgh. unknown

1863réf. D19919Florida: Munsell San Augustin de la Florida 1863. Poor. One of 160 copies. Defective disbound without only remnants of original wraps. Sold as is. "The unknown author of this authoritative account of Sonora is thought to have been a Jesuit missionary named Juan Nentuig who reached Sonora in 1750. From a reference on p. 196 it must have been written as late as November 21 1762. Nentuig remained until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. The false imprint of Saint Augustine Florida on the title derives from Buckingham Smith's pride in his home town" - Streeter. "The author resided at a place on the River Yaqni where that stream flows through a cañon so deep as to shut out three quarters of the heavens from sight. The first sixty-nine pages are occupied with a natural history of the country .The subjects relating to the Indians occupy pp.69 to 173" - Field. Munsell, San Augustin, de la Florida paperback

réf. 77880Small packet of materials concerning investment opportunities in St. Petersburg Florida mailed by Strout Realty to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Spencer of Delavan Wisconsin on March 22 1957. The contents consist of an informational brochure about the city and a detailed list with pricing information for fifteen "Strout Bargains" in St. Petersburg. Four of the properties are marked "Sold" and there is a holographic correction to the price of the final listing: "A Retirement Gem" for $3950. Located on the Pinellas peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico "St. Pete" experienced a population boom during the 1950s with the return of retiree resettlement which had declined precipitously during the Great Depression. At this same time as the brochure notes there was "increasing demand for Florida citrus products" which attracted many small farmers to the region. unknown
réf. 77874Small packet of marketing materials for the Lakeville Subdivision in North Fort Myers Florida. Housed in a Thomas Realty envelope mailed on April 15 1957 to E.R. Spencer of Delavan Wisconsin the contents include an introductory letter a carbonless purchase contract in triplicate and a detailed plat map 16" x 10". The letter references a booklet which is not present. Located along the Tamiami Trail U.S. 41 north of Fort Myers the Lakeville Subdivision was advertised as a "tropical wonderland" with homesites starting at $250. The plat map corresponds to the second section of the subdivision; presumably the first section had already been sold. However it appears the second section did not attract sufficient investors as this portion of the property remains largely undeveloped. unknown

1880réf. 307572St. Augustine Florida: The Florida Club 1880. Ephemera. Near fine. A stereoview card that can be read at many levels: as a glimpse of post-Reconstruction African American life in Florida as a White supremacist image as a statement of class superiority and as an early image of the Lost Cause. These photographs offer a portrait of a young Black boy at work probably for a poor white farmer. The boy sits in an oxcart in the St. Augustine Plaza de la Constitucion. Presumably the driver of the cart has stepped away leaving the child in charge. That the child is working is suggested by the caption pasted on the verso back which refers to the boy and the ox as "the team of a Florida cracker" which is "a nickname applied to the poor white people of The South" Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms 1877. The intent of this stereoview is clearly to denigrate the boy for being black and the oxcart's owner for being poor but it also shows significant responsibility entrusted to a child as well as suggesting the prevalence of child labor in Florida at the end of the 19th century. The publisher of this image was a Florida photographers' cooperative founded by Charles Seaver Jr. and George Pierron which sold views from the St. Augustine area in the 1870s and 1880s. From the location of the scene the photograph can be dated more precisely to 1879 or after. The Confederate Memorial Obelisk is clearly visible in the background. The 1872 obelisk was the first monument to the Lost Cause of the Confederacy erected in Florida. It was moved to the Plaza de la Constitución in 1879. Southern Gems series. Flat mount stereoview stereograph. Albumen silver print 6-1/8 by 3-5/32 inches. Letterpress caption affixed to the back verso. A near fine example with very minor nicks to the edge of the mount. The image is a copy image of the two original stereoview photographs printed as a single photograph. The image has good contrast and detail. The Florida Club unknown
