Includes remarks and reports from each chapter located all over the state. On report for instance “The great need of a State-wide compulsory education law in Florida. In my questionnaire prepared for the Biennial last spring I had reluctantly to inform my National Chairman that of Florida’s fifty-four counties only twelve had any compulsory education laws and they are almost perfunctory. Four months of four five-school-day weeks or eighty days’ “schooling” in all for the children of this State! Is it any wonder that our reform schools are overcrowded Isn’t a compulsory-attendance law binding upon parents a crying need. Let each in her own district for a State compulsory-education law which will put the children in school and keep them there during the entire school year. It is often said that a nation’s most valuable asset is its children. They are also a liability. If they are held long enough in the earlier grades by the right sort of teachers -- those with a vision -- they will wish to go on even though their shortsighted parents may want to put them at wage earning. In this connection I recently asked our fine attendance officer for Dade County Mrs. Bain formerly Louisville’s Juvenile Court officer if the Colorado plan had ever been tried in Florida -- of holding parents primarily responsible for truant children. She replied that we have an adult-responsibiity act in Dade County and that in case of chronic truancy as most such cases are she was about to apply that remedy Legislative Committee please note. Florida shares with Georgia and Arkansas the doubtful distinction of being one of the three most illiterate States in the Union -- the third I believe. unknown books

réf. 50402bd2Wake-Brook House 1976. First Edition Stated. Signed and inscribed by Aileen B. Chapman Bicentennial ChairmanOctavo green leatherette hardcover silver letters 144 pp. Very Good in a Very Good mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes light chipping. From dust jacket: This is an important book -- and a valuable one. Probably there has never been another book quite like it. It is the history of Florida schools told from a hundred different viewpoints by the people most intimately involved in educational development. Teachers who devoted their lives to the instruction of youth possess credentials which qualify them to serve as experts on any panel considering school problems or planning school policies. They richly deserve to be listened to and to have their advice taken seriously. In this book however they are not sitting in solemn judgment nor trying to dictate what should be done. They simply report what happened to the schools in which they taught and what happened to the students. But between the lines of these brief reports there lies a wealth of priceless material which should be thoughtfully considered by everyone interested in our schools. We hasten to add however lest we frighten off any readers who may just wish to be informed or entertained that these reports make delightful reading and are often amusing. Anyone who ever attended school and of course that is all of us can identify with the characters and situations described here. Perhaps those who attended only the most modern institutions will react with horror at the idea of walking miles to a rural schoolhouse with outside privies. Perhaps those who received their early education in rural schools will recall those days with nostalgia. But whatever the reaction everyone can read these reports with sympathy and understanding. hardcover books

Florida Becomes a State consists of selected documents relating to the admission of Florida to the Union an introduction by Dorothy Dodd Archivist in the Florida State Library and a foreword by W. T. Cash State Librarian discussing social life in Florida about the time it became a state. The documents constitute a casebook in the formation of a state and are therefore not only useful to those interested in Florida history but to students of the science of government as well. The introduction is more than a skillful interpretation of the documents; it is a splendid illustration of the gradual progress of Florida in surmounting obstacles on the road to statehood. 1973réf. vas5284Gainesville FL: Ewing Printing INc. 1973. Octavo green textured wrappers softbound iv 225 pp. Fine. From Preface: Since no previous attempt has been made to narrate the story of the profession of Pharmacy in the State of Florida it was felt that there would be an interest in this by pharmacists and related personnel. An endeavor has been made in this book to give an accurate account and some of the activities which brought the profession to its present standing. In doing this each of the areas of pharmacy have been treated as a unit for ready reference. Florida with the oldest city in the United States St. Augustine remained a pioneer state until rather recent times when compared with some of its more northern neighbors. However pharmacists of Florida have contributed much to the profession as a whole. It is hoped that those who read the book will find the subject matter an interesting and beneficial background for their continued service to the public as members of the health care team. Many people have assisted in gathering information and deep appreciation is expressed to all of them. Contents: The Florida Pharmaceutical Association; The Ladies Auxiliary of the Florida Pharmaceutical Association; The Traveling Mens Auxiliary of the Florida Pharmaceutical Association; Some Early Pharmacy Laws in Florida; The Florida Board of Pharmacy; Pharmacy Education in Florida; Pharmacies and Pharmacists in Florida; Wholesale Drug Houses in Florida; Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Florida; Hospital Pharmacy in Florida; References; Index. From dust jacket: Hanging chads. Butterfly ballots. Unruly demonstrations across the country. A state capital occupied by the national press corps. For thirty-six excruciating days in late 2000 a nation held its breath while behind closed doors the seven justices of the Florida Supreme Court debated the outcome of the presidential election. The events that transpired within the justices’ chambers -- their arguments exhortations and appeals to one another -- have remained a mystery. until now. Inside Bush v. Gore presents the unique candid and compelling perspective of the Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice who stood at the center of the storm. Charley Wells a strong dissenting voice in the court’s 4-3 decision that mandated a statewide manual recount gives an unprecedented play-by-play of those tumultuous days. Not only is his legal analysis of Bush v. Gore at the state and federal levels invaluable but he also offers an insider’s view of judicial relationships the frustrations of ambiguous election laws the difficulties of separating the legalities from the politics and the unsung yet critical role played by state court professionals. Ultimately Inside Bush v. Gore is a story about the transfer of power in a country that prides itself on the democratic process of electing its leaders and the ability of the court system to justly and fairly resolve disputes. With the advantage of hindsite and the perspective gained by reading countless commentaries and studies about the decisions of both the Florida and the United States Supreme Courts Wells highlights how the rule of law prevailed in the midst of one of the country’s most controversial elections in recent history.
