1961ref. 25673New York: The Macmillan Company. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1961. First American Edition. Hardcover. nice copy minimal shelfwear only light age-toning to pages; jacket lightly scuffed and a bit soiled a couple of tiny closed tears along bottom edge. Mildly satiric Western novel set against the backdrop of a small Italian circus that's touring the Wild West in the 1880s. "The circus is owned by an elderly Italian who doubles as clown and his young energetic impudent forthright magnificently alive daughter. Having fallen on hard times the troupe is on its way to the Texas ranch of their new owner when they are joined by a cynical young rogue: Charlie Gallagher. Our heroine is soon cheerfully seduced and loses her heart as well as her virtue to the unregenerate Charlie. Then follows a series of calamitous misadventures which dispose of the gallant company one by one." Over a half-dozen of this author's books were made into movies and this plot really sounds like a wacky 60s comedy-in-waiting -- but alas it wasn't. . The Macmillan Company hardcover books

"In his criticism over the years Mr. Simon has consistently paid attention to the books of poets and has written occasional verse and translated foreign poetry. In Dreamers of Dreams readers will find essays on the great pathfinders and innovators: Rimbaud Mallarme Rilke Verlaine Eliot Anna Akhmatova Paul Celan and yes Oscar Wilde. But there is also rich criticism of poets nearer to us: James Merrill Robert Graves Joseph Brodsky John Ashbery and Philip Larkin - not always in admiration. The book also includes Mr. Simon's thoughts on the best English poem about physical love on the translation of poetry and on some forgotten minor poets whose only sin was accessibility and who cry out for rediscovery" Jacket. unknown books
